Manderley, my good Golden Age fellow, where art thou? Do you still occasionally frequent this board? If you see this message, what do you think of LLL’s Paramount westerns box set? I’ve been eagerly devouring it since it arrived a couple days ago. My favorite box set release since Intrada’s amazing Franz Waxman set a couple Christmases ago! And how about Kritzerland’s Alfred Newman/Henry King collaboration set? Are you relishing the complete Prince of Foxes? What future Golden Age box sets would you suggest, at this point? It seems now like the best method to still get some of this great music of the era out into the world... I still cherish the FSM Lassie box set which I think you originally recommended to Lukas. My favorite disc is still the Previn one, even with the sound effects. Incredible music from when he was still (barely) a teenager. One of the greatest debut film scores of all time. Yavar

Happy Birthday Manderley. I hope you're doing well. His insight and contributions to the message board were always fascinating. Hoping to see more from him in the future.

I miss him too. His background was very different from mine; his knowledge too -- his 'nuts-and-bolt' knowledge about Golden Age cinema is far beyond my own, so it was always illuminating to read his posts. I met him at Morricone's (the FSM member, not the composer) pool party in 2012, and we had a nice little exchange. Hope he's doing well, and that his retirement from this place is for board-related reasons (like Kev's on-point remark about the "toxic" atmosphere here). Give him my regards at the Bernstein concert of yours, Morricone! Henry.had.a pool party.and.didnt.invite me?

"When what to my wondering eyes should appear But a thread with my name And some comments so dear......" Thank you, Yavar, for remembering.....and to all the others who took the time to post on this thread. It's with some irony that I came across this thread on the same day I saw Kevin's thread about a "toxic FSM". The world has certainly changed since I first logged on to FSM, perhaps 18 or so years ago. I miss those days of reading thoughtful and interesting posts about film music and the working denizens of that milieu, even as we also had another side of this board where fun topics were discussed in a funny, clever and witty way......and the posters were reasonably patient and kind to each other. And, yes, I did have a Birthday---on January 6---along with Joan of Arc, Loretta Young and Carl Sandburg among others, but, of course, they're long gone, and, like Yvonne De Carlo in FOLLIES, "I'm Still Here" and on my feet and doing surprisingly well for a newly minted 80-year-old. So that's all to the good...... REBECCA, the movie, opened around the country in early January of 1940, so I am actually slightly older than the depiction of "Manderley" in that classic film. (.....and perhaps as weathered!) All your various comments have (slightly) encouraged me to return to FSM more regularly, so maybe I will. We'll have to see. Meantime, in the next few days, I may try to answer and/or discuss a few of the comments some of you have made in the various posts. Thanks again to all of you for making my 80th Birthday month a special one......

Please do! And great to hear from you. You would be the perfect antidote this board needs. Indeed. That's the exact same thought that struck me and inspired me to post this thread! Would love to see you back here, manderley, even occasionally! Lots of great new Golden Age releases to talk about from the last quarter of this year in particular. Yavar
