I havent heard much of him (that I know of) but I absolutely LOVE his work for The Great Gatsby and Viktor Frankenstein. They are melodic, epic and rich with themes. Exactly what I like about score.
Can you let me know of other works of his which is in this style?
1999 : Guns 1748 (Plunkett & Macleane) de Jake Scott
1999 : Bone Collector de Phillip Noyce 2001 : Moulin Rouge de Baz Luhrmann
2007 : Elizabeth : L'Âge d'or (Elizabeth: The Golden Age) de Shekhar Kapur (en collaboration avec Allah Rakha Rahman)
2008 : L'Incroyable Hulk (The Incredible Hulk) de Louis Leterrier AMAZON CDR
2013 : Gatsby le Magnifique (The Great Gatsby) de Baz Luhrmann AMAZON CDR 2015 : Loin de la foule déchaînée (Far from the Madding Crowd) de Thomas Vinterberg
Like Keky I would also recommend FILM WORKS 1995-2005 (with excellent stuff from ROMEO AND JULIET, THE BONE COLLECTOR, PLUNKETT & MACLEANE, RAY, etc) as well as Armstrong's non-film albums THE SPACE BETWEEN US, AS IF TO NOTHING, ROSA MORTA & SUN ON YOU. Regarding his more recent scores, I also like WORLD TRADE CENTER (featuring a poignant main theme) and parts of ELIZABETH THE GOLDEN AGE. I didn't see the movie FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD but the soundtrack alone didn't do much for me. I by far prefer it when Armstrong combines his great strings together with electronics, but that's nothing but a matter of taste.
There re at least two compilation CDs of his work, try those ones: Film Works, For the Record. Great albums!
Yes, those are fine albums -- compilations are always a great gateway in.
Other than that, it's hard to go wrong with Armstrong, whether you like orchestral or electronic stuff. He does both equally well. I particularly recommend:
PLUNKETT & MACLEANE WORLD TRADE CENTER IN TIME FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD MUSIC FOR THE FILMS OF PETER MULLAN ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
...and the FILM WORKS 1995-2005 CD, as previously mentioned.
