Found my old 1980 Cassette Tape recording of John Williams 1980 Boston Pops Debut where the Maestro and Burgess Meredith performed "THE REIVERS" with Narration by Burgess for the First Time. Wanted to share with you all. Pretty cool Rare stuff. They, many years later made a legitimate recording for CD, but it's fun to hear this version, The Very First Time it was performed. Excuse the slight buzz at the the start, it does go away pretty quickly. I can remember recording this off the TV in my living room way back when. Hear it as "You are There! 1980 Archival Sound" Just a HEADS UP, there is about 15 seconds of silence on the original tape starting at: 11:54 but the sound comes back at: 12:10 Sorry I couldn't fix it with my limited skills.

Who remembers seeing and hearing this the night it happened back in 1980 on your local PBS Channel?

Enjoy! Wonder if anyone has the full Video of this and that great night when John Williams Debuted with the Boston Pops? They should release all the "Evening at Pops" shows from the early 80's!

I taped it that night too! That was also the concert when Williams debuted his THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK themes - a few weeks before the album was released.

Cool guys! Thanks for your comments.

I'll see if I can get his First Performance of THE COWBOYS Overture up on youtube (audio only) later today. It started the whole program that Debut Night and is a real delight to hear!

Got it up on youtube. Here it is! Enjoy!

Wow! What a trip down memory lane. Particularly because Meredith narrated the film itself which I saw at the Pantages Theater in 1969. I took note of one name on the credits I never was fully conscious of, John Williams. I bought the soundtrack and worked my way back with FITZWILLY, NOT WITH MY WIFE YOU DON'T, PENELOPE, HOW TO STEAL A MILLION and others. Never missed one after that.

I'm fairly certain I had this on a CD-R or DVD-R in the 90s, but thanks for uploading anyway, zoobsters!

And yes, I agree with you. They should release ALL of Williams' "Evening at Pops" programmes on video in some form. Never gonna happen, though.

Only have the version on the 'Music for Stage & Screen' CD. Saw Williams conducting the LSO in London, with narration by.....? I don't recall the gentleman's name. Pretty awesome stuff !

Loved that for the Stage Reading Narration Version of THE REIVERS, Williams actually wrote New Music for the "Horse Race" sequence that did not appear in the film. The music that is. The Horse Race in the film was scored with a weird type of sound design effect to it and not that great rousing new stuff he wrote for the narration.

The whole Soundtrack that was released on LP and then CD was definitely a "re-recording" of Williams score and not the actually tracks used in the movie. The Soundtrack could use a Re-release with both Original Score Tracks and the Re-recording music as well. That would be totally cool.

The music in the film seemed mixed down way to low for my own personal taste. Wonder if Williams was a tad pissed at director Mark Rydell for the mix?

In the movie THE REIVERS Burgess Meredith's young boy character DID NOT drink beer at the Whore House as he was being respectful of his Mother and Father's wishes for not drinking, but in the narration version Meredith does comment that it was the first time he tasted Beer and he "Liked it fine!"

Interesting.

Okay, here is the Audio Intro of John Williams Boston Pops Debut and his Opening selection THE COWBOYS Overture from the 1980 PBS Broadcast of Evening at Pops!

I remember the exuberance and joy of first hearing it in all it's wonderfulness on that great night at home! What a great Movie Music Memory!

Enjoy!

Added personal memory for me. My dear mother was in the room or in the adjoining kitchen as I recorded this. She was being extremely careful not to make any extra noise in the background so I could get as best recording as possible. God Bless you Mama and Thanks! Rest in Peace my dearest Angel!

The music for the horse race IN THE FILM is near the top of my most wanted unreleased John Williams music.
Yes zoob, it features a strange musical effect (glissando?) like reverberating chords that conjure up a 'looking back into time' kind of feeling that is utterly brilliant. Just genius.
I'm desperate for an expanded Reivers release. Day one purchase.
I imagine there are lots of alternate takes and revisions to this one. Even from what we have (the original album, the Sony slight expansion and the score in the film) one can hear alt versions.
And this after Lalo Schifrin's original score was tossed.
The musical direction for this film must have troubled the producers.

God, no. But a cleaned-up remaster would be nice. Not that the Sony release (which is also sorta expanded) doesn't sound fine the way it is (for a 1969 release), but if the masters exist, I would be game to at least check out a version with improved sound.

So, after careful examination, the narrator in London at the Barbican in 1998 was Oliver Ford Davies. Great rendition!

Zooba, nice memory about your mother. I have similar memories with my mother while I taped from the tv, but because I'm older my crude tapes were tv themes like It Takes a Thief, Cimarron Strip, The Name of the Game, T.H.E. Cat, Mannix, and so on. About The Reivers. I'm not much of a fan of Williams' scores for family films--outside of the films. But as a listening experience I love things like Jane Eyre, Images, and The Long Goodbye. The Reivers is a great score and my favorite of John Williams. On record or in concert I can really do without the narration.

Yes, indeed, zooba...thanks very much for posting this. Was surprised how much of Meredith's narration I recalled...and especially the part where he puts the actor's emphasis on 'and so here we were, three Reivers...hightailin' it FOR MEMPHIS! (string section takes off!)

Great, great memory, that concert. Recall that Gene Shalit was the host for the televised program, probably because of his connection with "Mystery" (as with "Evening at Pops," produced by WGBH).

Anyone remember Williams' "Pops On The March" (with the "Stars and Stripes Forever" quotes)? Never understood why the piece itself was left off the album of the same name. Recall that being Williams' first original work written expressly for the Boston Pops.

Well, the piece WAS recorded for the I LOVE A PARADE album years later (1991), but yes -- weird that it wasn't included on that album instead. Probably some logistical reasons. Maybe the composition was too fresh to have been recorded for the 1980 album bearing the same name, I don't know.

Here is the STAGE AND SCREEN CD Recording Version of the THE REIVERS with Narration.

I believe there was another recent concert perromance with none other than 'God Almighty' himself (Morgan Freeman) doing the narration. I'll post the link when I get back home. Its rather interesting as Morgan more or less falls back on Meredith's previously recorded style.

The fist time he played The Cowboys live was at ‘Filmharmonic ‘76ers which i attended. Only the Main Title however, not the concert Overture...

http://www.jw-collection.de/misc/filmharmonic/film76.htm

The Herrmann tribute was of course because he passed away the previous December. These concerts were the first of their kind & amazing for a 12 year old (me) to attend. The programme notes also said he is currently working on a British made science fiction film!

That was at Tanglewood, maybe 8 or 9 years ago, with JW conducting the Boston Pops. I was lucky to be able to attend that concert, it was a great show. And of course, Morgan Freeman could narrate the phone book and I'd be happy.
