A label called Dutton Vocalion in the UK is advertising newly remastered SACD quadraphonic recordings of a couple of well known OBC recordings, COMPANY and A CHORUS LINE. Could these possibly be legitimate? Would SONY allow another label access to the original session masters of such classic recordings?

Dutton Vocalion has been around for many years. I have a number of their discs and they are excellent at least to my ears. They have a wide range of music including historic recordings, pop, rock, jazz, classical, film music, etc. Everything is legitimate.
Their SACD discs are playable on any CD player. Check out their website.

They are advertising that the 2 recordings I mentioned were newly remastered in Aug., 2020. How is that possible without access to the original session masters?

Their website listing of Company states: "Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Michael J. Dutton"

Their listing of A Chorus Line states: "Remastered from the original analogue tapes by Michael J. Dutton"
and
"Note: this reissue features the original stereo and quadraphonic mixes, as made by Columbia Records' engineers in 1975."

Has Sony ever licensed another label and given it access to original music sessions to remaster and release well known recordings such as these? Just asking. Sony's own CDs of these recordings (but not quadrophonic) are still widely available.

They just did 7 of the Charles Gerhardt Film Score Recordings on the SACD format. Where do you think they got their Tapes from?

In fact, there's been a lot of discussion on this Board about Dutton and the Gerhardts, so I was surprised to see this thread. But then, I miss a lot of things on the Board all the time...

I bought the 12 CD Charles Gerhardt conducts Classic Film Scores, although the box states it was released by Sony Music.

Literally all the time. They typically cooperate and provide transfers of elements in their possession, to labels who pay to sub-license things in their catalogue. That’s how, for example, the new-ish Kritzerland editions of Moross’s The Cardinal and Fielding’s Advise & Consent (the first time these scores had been released on CD from the original tapes, apparently) came about, in much better sound quality than any prior editions.

There was a point this past year when it looked as if Sony had ceased any further sub-licensing of their catalogue (they sent out an official letter to the labels) but that was either short lived or a false alarm, because MV stated a few months ago that Sony Music was back open to sub-licensing (but then the pandemic hit and everything slowed down).

They don't get the actual session masters, they get the ALBUM masters - a whole different kettle of fish. Then they master those. But the short answer is, we got the three-track session masters for most of the soundtracks we've issued. They don't send the TAPES, obviously, they send digital files, we combine the three tracks into two and voila. But that's NOT what Dutton is doing here. They're using the album master of the two-track and the quad mixes that were done for those albums back in the day.

And another UK company - Stage Door - is currently reissuing a few Sony Original Cast Recordings and making a good job of it! And they are legal as well.

Dutton-Vocalion are great. Their masterings of the Charles Gerhardt RCA series are fantastic.

Cheers

I had never heard of this label. Questions arose about these recordings on a different message board. That is why I asked the question here. I wasn't implying anything. Not everyone is as knowledgeable about these things as some of the people here are. I was (naively, apparently) looking for information, and I received it. That's all.

Thanks, both Yavar and haineshisway. I had remembered reading about the letter Sony sent out to the various labels some time ago, but did not recall MV's subsequent comments. You guys have cleared up my confusion.

I have the 12-CD box set from Sony Music. The sound quality is superb. Is that because of Sony's work or because of Dutton-Vocalion? Please forgive my ignorance if this is a dumb question.

And the quadraphonic sound is immersive. I had the quad LPs and these are much better.

NOT a dumb question. Vocalion has been focusing on the QUAD releases so far from the Classic Film Scores series reformatted for SACD Multichannel, and I believe they have released all the CFS albums that were offered in quad in the 70s: Lost Horizon, Captain Blood, Casablanca, Spellbound, Citizen Kane, and Sunset Boulevard as well as David Raksin's Laura. They also included almost everything unique to the Quad release of Spectacular World except the Universal Fanfare and the Dance Of The Seven Veils because they don't really fit easily anywhere else.

They've suggested they want to continue to release the rest of the non-quad lps in the series but we'll see what they can do.

Sony Music reissued the standard stereo masters on CD. They sound wonderful, though damage to suites from Treasure of Sierra Madre and Captain Blood are audible.

Personally I hope they find a way to remaster and release Gerhard's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS/STAR WARS album which was an unofficial part of the series.

Two years ago Stage Door released the first legitimate CD of the OBC recording of DONNYBROOK!, a show with an excellent, underrated score. The sound quality was excellent. This recording could not be legally released in the U.S. by Decca Records because of missing paperwork. As a result poor quality bootlegs of this fine score started popping up in the U.S.

How did Stage Door achieve such superior sound quality? Did they have any access to master tapes from the Decca/Universal Music family of record labels? Again if this is a dumb question, I apologize for my lack of knowledge.
