SEASON 1:

Normally I wouldn't cover a series where there are so few episodes up (compared to how total there are) but -- not to sound morbid -- Stu Phillips isn't exactly a spring chicken anymore and I've made a decision to do as many shows as I can that he worked on, 'cause he reads and posts in the threads I create to shows he worked on. I don't know if it's because he generally checks out the board or if somebody is e-mailing him to let him know -- either way works for me.

Right now only some season one episodes are up and right now they are only Stu Who efforts.

Maybe you need to ask Stu a specific question, Justin. The series is news to me I can tell you - never even heard of it before. I'd love to know how he came up with all those intro themes and zingers that would make you wake up a second time during the day. The thing about TV themes for me is that even if the box was on and you were not paying it a huge amount of attention, the sight/sound of all those episodes in the background could actually define what everyday 'normality' was composed of.

For instance, I recently bought the Varese knightrider 2-fer and hearing that ever so iconic theme - I'd be bowled over to hear what kind of ideas telescoping together went in to produce that output? The Varese inlay card doesn't have much to say about KR overall in terms of the 2 disc content, however, it does recount a short history of the 3 layers of synth going on to deliver the iconic main title, one of them (the first introduced) being described as the "serpentine riff." The original temp track was apparently from a German source - now, I wonder what that originally sounded like?

Stu Phillips wrote a lot of great music, but Season 1 Switch was always my favorite. Show creator Glen Larson may have officially written the theme, but I expect Stu developed it into that Season 1 Main Title. I was 13 when this show debuted, and I loved the opening so much I used two portable cassette players to dub a 45 minute cassette of nothing but the minute long main title repeated over and over. This original opening theme is available, by the way, on Television’s Greatest Hits Vol. 5…without the Robert Wagner / Eddie Albert narration .

I was disappointed when season 2 of Switch had a new main title; a generic detective show arrangement. This mirrors what happened with the show itself. It started out as a show where the two private eye protagonists (Wagner and Albert) would develop elaborate cons to trick the bad guys into getting themselves caught. The Sting had won the Oscar for best pic a couple of years earlier; I expect that inspired the show’s creation. David Chase, Sopranos creator, was a story guy and writer on Switch. In a recent interview he said that the network (CBS) execs drove the show runners to abandon the con game premise and Switch turned into just another run of the mill 70’s detective show….and the music changed too.

I’m probably the only dude in the world that cares, but I would pay mightily to have some of this music available (Season 1 especially).

Nothing like the KR theme. And there were four synth players.

The notes say that nothing was sequenced or edited in post, so although the KR theme is high end electronic, it was played 'organically' without interruption. But then, the kind of desktop computer that would be used to make instant editorial choices on the fly didn't exist back in '82. So, it would seem the theme is principally the result of a good old jamming session.

There is a must ask question that does have some logic to it, even for a casual listener like me. There is also an end title cue on the main disc. TV episodes would differentiate between the MT intro to an episode, but the end title bookend had a slightly different form. What was the basic formula for setting up the intro as opposed to the 'wrapping up' of the theme for the back end of an episode?

There is definitively some good touches of the "nervous angular long-hair" music going on in cues, with that drama and action styling you can recognize after hearing a number of Stu scores to various series.

Thank goodness that while the video quality is still not great, this episode has better sound than earlier videos, so making a suite of the scoring will be worthwhile.

Hands down the best episode score of the series I have covered so far.

The website used is safe. Please note that the video that plays, is very unlikely to work in Internet Explorer.

Attention readers: I am implementing a new system that is nothing more than a note to myself; for cues that I want to include in a suite, for now on I will denote them with ^ symbol. It has no special meaning to anyone else but myself. No, an up arrow symbol doesn't mean the cue is bad (it just may have too much SFX or FX for suite use or just isn't worth my time to edit and include). Hence forth this system will be in all future threads and pre-exiting threads that I go back to for missed episodes.

I wonder how he got the job. Did he know the episode director? Did Stu know him and not have the time to score it and recommended him?

According to his IMDb resume, this was his final scoring project. He had a short scoring career that was only in the 1970's. He also did some acting, which appeared to also end in the 1970's. A quick search suggests he's still alive.

I could take or leave the source music (if recorded and not played live on screen).

No one is credited as the piano player who is seen prominently playing the piano and even doing a "Tommy, how's the peepin'?" shoulder look in the last minute or so of the episode; could that be Stu?

The piano player in the last minute of the show is Eddie Albert. As for Dan Vincent, never heard of him so I didn't recommend him. If I remember correctly, I missed that episode because I was scoring the pilot to Quincy.

"The Pirates of Tin Pan Alley"
    By: Dick Halligan

Given how different Sauter's scoring is from Halligan's and that they didn't have Dick back, I take it they weren't happy with the score and probably decided to save some money and just keep it rather than have it rescored.

I gotta say, if I were a composer scoring an episode where it's almost completely circus source music, I'd call up my orchestrator, tell him I'll kick some money back to him if he'll write this shit, and let him handle all the circus source music and go sleep in or something.

I only found three cues in the episode, outside of the source music. Only the cue I cited should be released.

Unless I missed a short cue while skimming, I cited the entire episode score (yeah, that's correct -- no opening of closing cues this episode).

This was the final series Sauter worked on. In 1979 he scored a TV movie ("Beggerman, Thief") and about two years later he died relatively young, at the age of 66 from a heart attack; an old news article says he was in a hospital when it happened, so apparently things were not going well for him.
