LE CHAT / LE TRAIN Music by Philippe Sarde LIMITED EDITION OF 500 UNITS https://quartetrecords.com/product/le-chat-le-train/ Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents the CD release of a Philippe Sarde and Pierre Granier-Deferre double-header: LE CHAT and LE TRAIN— both based upon Georges Simenon stories. LE CHAT (1971) stars Jean Gabin and Simone Signoret as an old married couple whose miserable marriage is put to the test by a cat and the impending destruction of their home. Sarde's music is anchored by the wistful ballad "Le Temps des souvenirs" performed by Jean Sablon as a memento of the happier days of the marriage. The darkly romantic score underlines the unusual relationship perfectly performed by the acting legends. Four cues were previously released on EP in France in 1971. This edition contains the premiere release of the complete score. LE TRAIN (1973) stars Romy Schneider and Jean-Louis Trintignant as star-crossed lovers who find true love on board an evacuation train in Northern France. In a most unusual twist, Philippe Sarde wrote part of his score before the film was shot and the themes were played back on set as inspiration—significantly contributing to the overall feel of the movie. The original 9-track LP program (previously issued on CD by Universal France in its collection Ecoutez le cinema) is actually the complete score; since it had been devised as a work of 9 movements, the original track list has been preserved for this release. This album has been produced by Edouard Dubois and the composer, and mastered by Chris Malone from first-generation master tapes provided by Gruppo Sugar. The richly illustrated package features liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the films and scores. CÉSAR ET ROSALIE Music by Philippe Sarde LIMITED EDITION OF 500 UNITS https://quartetrecords.com/product/cesar-et-rosalie/ Quartet Records, in collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, presents an expanded CD release of the romantic, innovative, masterful score by Philippe Sarde (GHOST STORY, THE TENANT, THE BEAR, QUEST FOR FIRE) for CÉSAR ET ROSALIE, one of his most significant scores for Claude Sautet. Starring Yves Montand and Romy Schneider as the titular couple, CÉSAR ET ROSALIE is about a most unusual love triangle in which a woman must choose between her artistic ex and her current boyfriend—who may be rich, but is much more boring than her old flame. As the men come to an understanding about the situation, they realize they can be good friends while Rosalie feels conflicted about their growing bond... Philippe Sarde's score is notable for its inclusion of a Moog synthesizer in its propulsive main theme, but the selection also includes a wide variety of cues from a love theme for Rosalie and her two beaus to cool jazz cues representing the ex-husband’s Bohemian lifestyle. This is the first-ever complete presentation of the score, including about 20 minutes of previously unreleased music. It has been produced by Edouard Dubois and the composer, and mastered by Chris Malone from first-generation master tapes courtesy of Gruppo Sugar. The richly illustrated package features liner notes by Gergely Hubai discussing the film and score.

Great news indeed. I have no doubt Stefan must also rejoice at these news. I am not that enthusiastic about these two new CDs and would have rather preferred UNE HISTOIRE SIMPLE which has had no CD release at all till now. Maybe it will happen in the future - either from Quartet or Music Box. CÉSAR ET ROSALIE was never one of my Sarde favourites as I didn´t like the use of the Moog Synthesizer which I found rather intrusive. However, the Universal Sarde/Sautet CD had as an additional track the really nice chanson "A House by the Sea" which is based on the main theme and which I enjoy very much. Unfortunately, the longest new pieces for LE CHAT - which is a very short score anyway - and for CÉSAR ET ROSALIE seem to be source music cues like the Tijuna track which was then re-used in LA VALISE. I am not particularly interested in these as this is just filler material. LE CHAT now has also two very short cues with only about 30 seconds, two suspense cues and then probably just repetitions of the main theme (which is already very well represented also through its use in GHOST STORY) - for example "Génerique debut" and "Générique fin" contain almost the same piano version - and "Le temps des souvenirs". The best score on the three CDs is for me LE TRAIN, but I already have the LP and CD with the same content and so wouldn´t need it for a third time.

I like how Quartet focuses on my favourite period of Sarde and this has saved me buying an overpriced LP. However, I'm not sure why it was necessary to re-issue Le Train, which is easily found, and not for instance Liza (1972), which was produced for the same Pema Music label? It is quite easy to say why. Both LE CHAT and LE TRAIN have been directed by Pierre Granier-Deferre, LIZA on the other hand by the Italian Marco Ferreri. And as Sarde has always attached great importance to his very special relationships with the individual directors, it is quite clear that - as long as he has the say - a score for a Ferreri film will not be coupled with one he did for Granier-Deferre. LIZA has therefore probably to be coupled with LA DERNIÈRE FEMME - and this could indeed be a CD which may be released in that way in the future either by Quartet or by Music Box as both scores are also owned by Sugar.

Like you, I wish they would have paired for instance UNE HISTOIRE SIMPLE together with CESAR ET ROSALIE. According to the Sautet / Sarde anthology, UNE HISTOIRE SIMPLE belongs to MCA Caravelle. So there might have been issues with the rights? I didn't see LE TRAIN and can't tell if there's more music in the movie but I second Stefan's advice to those who don't have this score: don't hesitate to get it. It's passionate, lyrical. Yes, Laurent, the rights for UNE HISTOIRE SIMPLE belong to Editions Caravelle - by the way, also those for LE FILS from 1973 which has not yet received a longer release as the LP on RCA had a few tracks which were not available on the Universal Sarde/Granier-Deferre CD - which might be a reason we still haven´t got this lovely score on CD. But I suppose it could still be released in the future. The common denominator among the three scores currently published by Quartet is of course that they all come from Sugar Music so that also LE TRAIN and LE CHAT could easily be coupled. LE TRAIN is a very impressive and touching movie which I recommend very much to view. But there is certainly not more music in the film than what has been released on LP/CD. It has often been the case with Sarde scores during the 70s that they were no longer than 20 or 25 minutes. Sometimes there was even less music in the films than on the LPs.

Now I could be wrong but I wonder if Quartet will be able to do anything that they already didn't have a contract in place with Sugar for future releases. Sugar/CAM are now owned by Decca from what I understand and that could throw a monkey wrench into anything else. You seem to have overlooked that for example Digitmovies - after a long pause of several months during which they couldn´t release any CAM catalogue titles anymore due to Sugar´s deal with UMG/Decca last year -- has suddenly published several titles from the CAM catalogue again in March and April. Four Flies Records as well has just a few days ago released a title from the CAM catalogue again with Trovajoli´s IL VUOTO. So these labels must have made a new deal with Sugar - otherwise these current releases would not have been possible. We will soon see whether Quartet can also release Italian CAM titles again. Besides, most of the French scores formerly owned by Pema/CAM are more or less uninteresting for Sugar/UMG/Decca in Italy. As Pema in France is no more, there is a division of Sugar in France called Sugar Music France. This is probably the company which handles the licensing deals for the French scores like the Sarde ones.

I can agree to some extend to your remark on César et Rosalie, although this score has some wonderful moments too and the Sautet movie of course is very good. So as a souvenir to the film I would want it. Speaking of the intrusive synth in the score, he also did a strange synth effect in Une Histoire Simple (in the track Le Multicolore), out of the blue (and sounding odd) is this strange synth sound. I would also have loved this score to be released as it has some truly beautiful moments. However regarding your last remark, I would like to invite you to compare the sound-samples of 'Le Train' on the Quartet-site to what you already have on the Emarcy/Universal CD. I also have the LP since the 70-s and the Emarcy-CD but I can tell you I do need this for a third time in this sound-quality! This is why all these new Sarde releases are must-buys for me, they sound fantastic. We are really being spoiled by Music Box and Quartet lately. Of course, a release of Une Histoire Simple or Le Fils would be great and maybe it will happen too, but this is about 'Le Train', 'Le Chat' and 'César and Rosalie', all great films and great scores. I'm really happy that we get these remastered releases at all. Much appreciated that these labels bother to release these CD's, considering the low number of copies they press.

These Philippe Sarde scores are great! I was particularly moved by the ending of Le Train—both as a sequence in the film and as a stand-alone piece of music. I concur with AlainC and his observations. Chris
