...and my last Kamen. What a steaming pile of poop. I do not get it at all. I could not even listen to the first disc all the way through. I quickly grabbed Egisto Macchi- Biologia to even my brain out after that mess.

Well...to quote the opening song of an 80’s TV sitcom (that probably wouldn’t get made today)...

Well the world don’t move
to the beat of just one drum
what might be right for you
may not be right for some

I struggle to get “in to” Die Hard and Robin Hood. But I’m very much looking forward to listening to this.

What an absolutely freakin’ brilliant score this is!!
I’ve always loved Michael Kamen’s scores but never really warmed much to the old X-Men cd apart from a few tracks. Finally got the new release and have just finished the first disc and there’s almost tears in my eyes. It’s a whole new experience and has quickly brought back everything I loved (and now miss) in Michael’s music. It’s just all such a great listen with every track offering something.THIS is what expansions are all about...breathing totally new life into a score. Couldn’t be happier with this.

Same here, spook.
I generally love Kamen but the old CD always sounded like there was a great score bursting to get out, but never quite did.
I've probably digged the same cues you have over the years.
Glad to hear this new edition serves up some revelatory Kamen score.
It's in an order coming soon to a house very near me.

Just finished playing CD1 of this.
It's a very interesting experience.
Hearing alternate versions of the original album ones offers up some nice contrasts.
The X School track is great with the added synths and beats.
Like spook, that brought tears to my eyes remembering how great Kamen was.
It was good to hear more renditions of the opening Nazi camp music too.
I always thought his main X-Men theme was like the build up to a theme, as opposed to a finished article.
Like that story from Raiders, when Williams wrote and previewed two themes and Spielberg asked him for both by joining them together, Kamen's X-Theme feels like it needs another bit to finish it off. But maybe that's just me.
Looking forward to getting stuck into disc 2 and hearing it all again, only differently wink

That’s great to hear, Kev! I’m happy you’re enjoying the set. I understand how Michael’s theme might seem a bit underdeveloped at first glance but, as often with his music, once you dive into the details it gets better and better. The rendition of the theme in “X-Jet” really shows how effective it is, without the need of further expansion ;-)
One cue that hasn’t been mentioned here yet is the alternate version of “Jean and Logan”, with the oboe replacing the piano. If there’s one Kamen signature cue to choose from this score it would be that one. I think Michael had a very unique way of writing tender melancholic music without it being overly sentimental and this cue is a perfect example. It’s my favorite one of this score.

Thanks Mink.
I take it that alt (oboe) version is the one at the end of Disc 2 (Track 28)?
I haven't gotten to that yet.

Still loving the expanded, revelatory nature of this score from LLL.

This is not Michael Kamen's fault... Gabriel "Gabe" McEnery is the one who actually composed this bad score. Kamen was so displeased with the result that he threw him from the rooftop.

But of course, and sadly, Columbo caught Kamen

I partly understand not being impressed with the X-Men. It is quite a jarring and dissonant score and not a satisfying a listen as some traditional super hero scores. I am a massive Michael Kamen fan of course and enjoy most of his output and have been enjoying this one a bit more than I did when it first came out but would have not recommended it as your first Kamen.

There are plenty of more straightforward scores to perhaps try. If you like more melodic orchestral stuff try Robin Hood, What Dreams May Come, Open Range, Mr Holland’s Opus, The Three Musketeers or 101 Dalmatians. Also try the Dead Zone, although that theme is partly adapted from classic work. Still a wonderful and emotional score. If you like action then of course Die Hard and Die Hard 2, along with the Lethal Weapon series and License to Kill. If you want smaller intimate scores then you have Circle of friends, Inventing the Abbots, The Winter Guest and Band of Brothers.

Don’t give up on Kamen quite yet. smile

Exactly, Gold Digger. I like his X-Men score well enough, but whether you're a fan or a hater, it's hardly representative of his general output!

My favorite Kamen is The Iron Giant, for what it's worth. Just magical.

I don't know who this is but my life is forever improved by having them on block. Go soak your head, weirdo.

I love this score, but hate how it was put together. Its put together like a sandwich. IMHO, it should have been everything "film version" first and at the end the alternates/extras.

It's a tough one on this though, jwb.
As the 'Film Versions' were long thought to have been 'tampered' with additional overlays and synths, we all thought there would be a fully orchestral score by Kamen sitting in the wings, waiting for revival.
The original Kamen tracks only muddy the waters some more.
The whole project seems to have been plagued with insecurity and indecision, certainly on the music front, in the post-production stage.
I always wonder how much of that is down to Singer being 'a brat' for not being able to have his first choice/best mate John Ottman score the film?
I too would have preferred disc 1 to be ALL the film versions, with disc 2 housing the Original Album Tracks and original/alt tracks.
But I suppose it's easy enough to do that yourself these days.

From what I understood it was actually Lauren Shuler-Donner who proved to be the biggest problem and not necessarily Singer.

Oh, okay Randy.
Sounds like a great place to be for Kamen!! (scoffs)
Not first choice with the director AND not impressing the producer.
Ouch!
Well done to him for managing to produce what he did under such dire circumstances.

What's even worse, a producer whose married to the guy with whom he had some of biggest hits.

From what I understood it was actually Lauren Shuler-Donner who proved to be the biggest problem and not necessarily Singer.

"During production, Singer would allegedly arrive late and experience mood swings and "explosive" tantrums. At the time, Singer claimed to be taking medication for back pain. Cast and crew members found Singer's drug use too "problematic". Kevin Feige, the film's associate producer, was flown on-set to ensure that Singer was kept in line. Singer was also accused of giving small roles to younger actors and minors in exchange for sex. A source for Pyro actor Alex Burton says Burton was told the role was created for him by Singer and Marc Collins-Rector. Burton was also flown from Los Angeles to Toronto for filming, an unusual occurrence for an actor with a minor role."

And lets just say the above paragraph supposedly doesn't apply to this one movie by Singer.
