Composer Michael Kamen expertly melds acoustic orchestra with a wide range of synthesizer textures, samples sounds and processed effects to fashion an exciting and urgent-sounding contemporary score that would not only play a vital role in successfully launching the blockbuster X-MEN motion-picture franchise and, with its unique sound, but also pave the way for such notable scores by others like UNBREAKABLE and BATMAN BEGINS. This expanded, remastered 2-CD presentation of the composer’s last score for 20th Century Fox features the film score on Disc 1, with original album tracks and additional music showcased on Disc 2. Just finished playing CD1 of this.
It's a very interesting experience.
Hearing alternate versions of the original album ones offers up some nice contrasts.
The X School track is great with the added synths and beats.
Like spook, that brought tears to my eyes remembering how great Kamen was.
It was good to hear more renditions of the opening Nazi camp music too.
I always thought his main X-Men theme was like the build up to a theme, as opposed to a finished article.
Like that story from Raiders, when Williams wrote and previewed two themes and Spielberg asked him for both by joining them together, Kamen's X-Theme feels like it needs another bit to finish it off. But maybe that's just me.

That’s great to hear, Kev! I’m happy you’re enjoying the set. I understand how Michael’s theme might seem a bit underdeveloped at first glance but, as often with his music, once you dive into the details it gets better and better. The rendition of the theme in “X-Jet” really shows how effective it is, without the need of further expansion ;-)
One cue that hasn’t been mentioned here yet is the alternate version of “Jean and Logan”, with the oboe replacing the piano. If there’s one Kamen signature cue to choose from this score it would be that one. I think Michael had a very unique way of writing tender melancholic music without it being overly sentimental and this cue is a perfect example. It’s my favorite one of this score.

...and my last Kamen. What a steaming pile of poop. I do not get it at all. I could not even listen to the first disc all the way through. I quickly grabbed Egisto Macchi- Biologia to even my brain out after that mess.
This is not Michael Kamen's fault... Gabriel "Gabe" McEnery is the one who actually composed this bad score. Kamen was so displeased with the result that he threw him from the rooftop.
But of course, and sadly, Columbo caught Kamen

Exactly, Gold Digger. I like his X-Men score well enough, but whether you're a fan or a hater, it's hardly representative of his general output!
My favorite Kamen is The Iron Giant, for what it's worth. Just magical.

I always wonder how much of that is down to Singer being 'a brat' to not being able to have his first choice/best mate John Ottman score the film?
From what I understood it was actually Lauren Shuler-Donner who proved to be the biggest problem and not necessarily Singer.

Not first choice with the director AND not impressing the producer.
Ouch!
Well done to him for managing to produce what he did under such dire circumstances.
What's even worse, a producer whose married to the guy with whom he had some of biggest hits.
