This, Spies Like Us and Ghostbusters were my introduction to Elmer Bernstein. Still 3 of my favorites

I wonder what was missing from the Varese? Maybe alternates or unused cues? Very cool release in any case - like all Bernstein scores, it's quite wonderful and deserves a reissue/expansion.

I mean it COULD just be a reissue -- it's been 16 years after all -- but as I said in the other thread, it's only 40 minutes so hopefully there's more.

The Varése Sarabande CD release has obtrusive digital fuzz in the quiet spots, though it's still a.dynamic and engaging listen.

It wouldn't surprise me if the new album is mostly derived from 35mm analogue backups, alá the recent Wrath of Khan release. Both scores were recorded in Hollywood within a year of each other. Both scores have previously had the pinched digital sound of the time.

I'm sure that our friends at La La Land will be able to find something to add to it.

La-La Land Records and Columbia Pictures proudly present a limited edition expanded and remastered release of legendary composer Elmer Bernstein’s (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER, GHOSTBUSTERS) original motion picture score to the 1981 big-screen comedy classic, STRIPES, starring Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Warren Oates, and directed by Ivan Reitman. Bernstein expertly melds robust military and heroic motifs with blues-and-jazz infused comedy riffs to create one of the most iconic scores to one of the most popular ‘80s era comedies.

Newly remixed by Michael McDonald from the original analog 3-track tapes and featuring nearly ten minutes of additional music, this definitive CD release, commemorating the film’s 40th Anniversary, shines light on Bernstein’s deft and inspired handling of comedy, a vital part of the movie’s rousing success. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this limited edition of 2000 units also features exclusive, in-depth liner notes by writer Jon Kaplan and art design by Dan Goldwasser.

I remember getting home from seeing this film at the cinema, back in 19-eighty-whatever, and humming the theme/march, still stuck in my head, into a little dictaphone, so I would be able to remember it beyond the night.
True story (God, I was a crank as a kid...still am, I guess) wink

I ALMOST saw this at the drive-in paired with Krull but he left home so late we would've missed half the film. I didn't see either of them until they came out on video.

How do I say this delicately? This is the first time I saw a beaver on the big screen.
Great score, it really sells the film. I'll double dip on this one.
