James Newton Howard has revealed in a recent interview with Score: The Podcast that he is attached to compose music for Lucasfilm’s upcoming Disney+ original series Willow. The show is developed by Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story, In the Land of Women) & Wendy Mericle (Arrow) and stars Warwick Davis who returns in the title role, alongside Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Ruby Cruz and Amer Chadha-Patel.

The fantasy drama is based on the 1986 feature (produced and written by George Lucas, directed by Ron Howard and scored by James Horner) and will take place years after the events of the film. Kasdan, Mericle, Howard are also executive producing the project with Kathleen Kennedy (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Mandalorian) and Michelle Rejwan (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). Stephen Woolfenden is directing all episodes.

Willow is currently in production and is expected to premiere in 2022 on Disney+.

Good choice. I seriously hope he keeps themes and ideas from Horner.

Hey, cool! He might have not succeeded Horner on the AVATAR sequels like a lot of people wanted, but I imagine for them this might be the next best thing...

I'd be surprised if he's the only composer on this show. Either way, my interest has gone way up.

Yes, great choice. Sort of a "consolation prize" for JNH not doing the AVATAR sequels (which he was born to do).

Great news. Nice to see Warwick Davis back as well.

All this hopefully point to a new 4k revival of the movie and subsequently hasten the reissue of the most awaited expanded score.

Good choice but I would like a young and a fresh composer like Abel or Jusid . JNH is very good composer but the last years it seems empty to me. His scores are very good but not tremendous or breathtaking.

Very exciting choice. I haven't been following JNH's music much lately, but I know he has the chops!

Howard's on a roll!

I too welcome the idea of bringing fresh composers on these gigs - but when my most favorite composer working today has been tapped to score the gig, and it is the genre in which he tends to excel... sorry, but it just has to be JNH!

He almost always delivers in a good old fashioned way...which is in need for that kinda flick.
His FANTASTIC BEAST score was one of the best fantasy scores in the last couple of years in my opinion. He still can write themes and not only soundscapes.

Very excited about his work on Willow. Should be great! Though I still can't believe their putting Kathleen Kennedy in charge of ANYTHING!

Fabulous. Wanna see it. Hopefully, JNH keeps Horner‘s main theme.
