I liked Holt's Loki work, so I hope she produces something good for this.

"BATGIRL---Warner Bros. shelved the superhero movie starring Leslie Grace, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser and JK Simmons after it performed poorly in test screenings. The studio will take a tax write-down to recoup its $90 million production costs. The tax write-down would be a better deal for Warner Bros. because it would take another $30 million--$50 million to market it theatrically and its income on HBO Max would be worth less than the tax write-down. The studio will not be able to monetize the movies by streaming them or selling them to another studio. Warner Bros. also shelved SCOOBI!: HOLIDAY HAUNT and will also take a tax write-down on it."

I just can't imagine how bad it must have been to just shelve a completed film. This boggles my mind. I just hope that tax write-offs aren't going to be the way forward whenever a film doesn't screen well. I can't tell you how many wonderful films are out there that initially received a critical lashing. I really have no desire for this to mark the beginning of the end of the cult film.

The write-off of the production was a unique circumstance created by the recent restructuring of the company and other than the SCOOBY project won't be repeated. The DEADLINE article Lukas linked to spells out what the various issues were - among them that there was no continuity between this project and any of the recent Batman projects, but that there discussions about including many characters in the BATGIRL project in upcoming films but in a different way.

Still, it's a huge disappointment (to put it mildly) to the whole creative team.

What a waste of the Keaton Batman character. I guess they ruined that, too.

I imagine at some point they'll re-edit it, film new scenes, toss Holt's score and have it re-scored, then dump the new version on an HBO pay service.

Keaton's Batman will be in The Flash Movie due out June 23, 2023. But I agree I was looking forward to seeing him in this.

What they should have done is make a sequel to "Batman"/"Batman Returns", and have Tim Burton and Elfman back, where it focuses on an older Keaton Batman who is retiring and mentoring Batgirl. And ignore the Schumacher films.

The reporting suggests that's exactly what they DIDN'T want to happen, since it was created for HBO Max in the first place.

Doesn't matter -- they are not going to leave it on the shelf unseen. Just not gonna happen.

I don't pretend to understand accounting, but they will if it's financially advantageous for them to do so (which I've been told it is, based on the terms of the Warner Bros. sale). Strategically, it may also benefit the new bosses to wash their hands of it.

About fifteen years ago, I co-created a television series for NBC and produced six episodes that cost them over ten million dollars. The president of NBC was fired while we were in post-production. The new president saw no upside to airing our show – if it succeeded, it was the old guy's show. If it failed, he'd be blamed for putting it on. So all six episodes went on the shelf unseen.

Don't take this the wrong way, but six episodes of some TV show aren't the same as a superhero film with a big-name character heading it, a returning actor/character, during a time period where superhero films are still "the thing".

(Is your show on IMDb? I can add it if not. Plenty of shows and pilots on there that never aired a lick on television, like a thirteen-episode UPN series)

I'm not taking it the wrong way! (But thanks!) And I don't have delusions of grandeur. I'm just saying, sometimes accounting and politics are the unseen forces that drive decisions that otherwise seem nonsensical.

Also, I'm not insisting it will never ever be released. I just don't find that result an impossibility.

And yes, my lamented unseen show is on IMDb. It's the only place it exists! (Besides the DVDs in my drawer.)

I like your idea. That would be interesting to see it play out on screen.

Ummm, that film may also get shelved. Warner doesn't know what to do with it since Ezra Miller, the guy who plays the Flash, is in a ton of legal trouble and has basically ruined his career after numerous violent outbursts and attacks on others and being mentally unstable and possibly kidnapping a minor.

Who knows if that Flash film is ever going to see the light of day. I suppose they could re-cast it and do re-shoots, but at this point that is probably not economically feasible. And the backlash Warner will get if they release it anytime soon would be a big stain on them after all that has come out about Miller in the past 6-8 months.

This all really sucks because both Keaton projects are probably going to be canned/shelved for very different reasons and reasons that had nothing to do with him. I feel bad and am mad because I want to see him again as Batman.

I like the idea that someone mentioned about Burton, Keaton and Elfman getting back together to do another Batman film.

I feel worse for Keaton's fans. Now if Flash gets cancelled, that's it for anyone wanting to see Keaton back in the suit.

I'm a big fan of Keaton and his Batman so this is a disappointment for me, too.

It's worth noting that Alan Horn was recently brought in to WB to rebuild the theatrical studio after the AT&T fiasco and years of weak leadership. I'm sure that one of his top priorities as an executive who oversaw the building of the MCU at Disney is to create a pipeline inside WB to create a creatively and financially successful DC Universe and torpedoing BATGIRL is a step toward getting all the DC franchises on that path. It's just sad that so much work went into the project from so many talented people before the studio decided they were better off without it.

The DC film franchise is a bit of a hodgepodge and if their next attempt is yet another shared, MCU-like universe then it will, again, fail. And, who knows, Batgirl may have even been the right starting point for that in many ways. This workprint will likely be leaked by pirates in a foreseeable future and Batgirl will become a cult oddity in some way. I refuse to believe this was a decision based upon some sight-unseen quality. WB/Discovery didn't suddenly just grow some unique standard for quality and have released many bad films in the past few years alone. What happens going forward will probably be another acquisition of the WB catalogue and studio by another conglomerate. I don't see Discovery sticking around long, especially if this news sends the message to the talent that their work does not matter.
