My Six Greatest Film Scores of All Time:

• Titanic (OST plus 4-disc LLL set)

• Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2-disc LLL set is sufficient)

• Time After Time (Royal Philharmonic plus the FSM OST)

• The Omega Man (version 2.0 is sufficient; 1st ed. adds the children singing)

• Superman (Blue Box or 3-disc LLL set is sufficient)

• Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2- or 3-disc LLL set is sufficient)

I'm thrilled they've all been served so well on CD. Literally the only morsel that isn't out there, that I could want, is the complete disco cue from Time After Time (heard partially in the film). It isn't much to complain about. I feel pretty lucky. I mean, I could go on and on, listing the next tier and so forth, but I've been lucky there too.

How about you: what are your absolute greatest, and is anything missing?

"Greatest" meaning in a filmhistoric sense or in a subjective point of view?

I mean your greatest, subjectively.

That's a fine thread Thor, but the longer the list, the less it means. I'm talking about the very top, personal favorites that you're deeply attached to. Seems like a different subject to me.

I will offer the six scores I think are the greatest of all time:

John Barry - The Lion In Winter
Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In The West
Ennio Morricone - Once Upon A Time In America
Ennio Morricone - The Mission
Maurice Jarre - Lawrence of Arabia
John Williams - Schindler's List

Obviously I listen to a lot more stuff by those composers on my list (and others as well) but I would say it's hard to argue against those 6 scores. I probably have a few other personal favourites that I possibly listen to more often, but I would say those mentioned I would class as the greatest.

I don't know about 'greatest' film scores of all time, but I know the ones that mean most to me.

The classic era Barry Bonds, plus his other best scores like The Lion In Winter.

The Morricone westerns, plus his other best scores like The Mission.

The Herrmann Hitchcocks, plus his other best scores like The Ghost and Mrs Muir.

John Williams' Star Wars and Empire.

The Miklós Rózsa epics like Ben-Hur and King of Kings.

The best of Jerry Goldsmith, like The Omen and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Cheers

Well, sure. The first episode I ever did of my podcast, was a list of my top 10 of all time. It's more or less the same today: http://celluloidtunes.no/celluloid-tunes-01-topp-10-soundtracks/ (click "playlist" to view).

Of course it's all subjective, but "greatest" implies at least some sort or set of criteria which these score uphold, whereas "favorites" are simply those one likes the most.

I am going to amend my list to include scores that either changed or defined the sound of movie music or made an impact beyond their films.

These are not necessarily my favorites, mostly skew towards Hollywood films and are only those I have in my collection.

    King Kong
The Day the Earth Stood Still
    Alexander Nevsky
    Spartacus
    Gone with the Wind
    Jaws
    The Omen
    Star Wars
    The Magnificent Seven
    Cool Hand Luke
    Psycho
