As i am now digitizing my complete cd collection, i discovered (again) that some of my discs does not play anymore
perhaps it helps you to save yours, before it is to late.
Star Wars the Phantom Menace Ultimate Edition
(Digibook, the discs and the plastic inlay had developed a kind surface grain, looks like iceflowers, can be removed with water and soap, but disc plays only up to track 18-20) , i looks not like the usual "rotten" discs
( and perhaps, i anyone has this disc without fault, perhaps i can get the missing tracks  )
and nearly all of the unmentionables CD-Rs are gone ( no problem with this,as we have the real deal from our beloved labels)

This CD edition was notorious for the effect you're describing.
There are other releases in a similar format that started rotting soon after they were released.
It's a chemical reaction apparently caused by the cardboard/paper/plastic in too near neigbourhood.
That's why I've removed the discs and put them in a separate standard double jewel case.

Recently did an iTunes rip of The Ultimate Phantom Menace and no issues. I wonder if it's a pressing batch thing?

hello and thanks to all so far
i store all my cds in "good" condition, in a cd rack
cd rott is not new for me, first time i was confronted was approx. 1997-1999.
many silva screen cds , cloud nine records and unichorn Kanchna were affected (Alien, Hermanns Moby Dick etc.; Its Alive2))
apprx. 50 cds were replaced by the manufacturer PDO UK ( exept one (Robinson Crusoe, Robert Mellin), that was not avaliable anymore)
btw i have al lot of DVDs and Blurays ( only 4-5 years old), affected by the same issue !
i am now by disc 600 ( from appr. a 3500-4000 CD Collection) and glad, that i only have 1 affected ( real pressed cds) till now, and also glad, that some of my oldest cds still works fine !
my Star Wars Ultimate ID ( Inner Ring/Pressing No is S0894602000-012 21 A1 and S089460200-0202 15 A2)
i think digipacks and other printed booklets are an additional cause of this, as many of my discs ( including DVDs Blurays) are affdected, when something additional (promotional flyers) was in the package, i think the special printed digipack with the metallic looking print, had someting to do with the chemical reaction)

CD rot, if it's going to happen, is going to happen even if you take the best care of your CDs.
It's not caused by a lack of care, although a lack of care can exacerbate it.
It's a miniscule manufacturing defect that can sometimes take 20 years or more to manifest as a problem.
The Unicorn-Kanchana discs were notorious for it.
Some of the early Silva Screen CDs had the problem too.
I imagine that having to nearly bend your CD in half to get it out of the case can't help, as that must stimulate the seals to crack even if only in a microscopic way.
However, as has already been said, the well known problem with the Phantom Menace Ultimate Edition 2CD is not CD rot, but a sort of misty coloured residue that builds up on the outside of the disc, as a reaction with the CD case.
It can be cleaned off. I have had to do this myself.
