I guess there's been some slight expansions like The Sound of Music and West Side Story but there's so many amazing musicals with incredible orchestral music and much of it is unreleased. I'm listening to a rip of Camelot and the entire score is gorgeous. I'd pick up an expanded release with quality sound in a heartbeat.

LLL released gorgeous deluxe editions of Fiddler on The Roof and Doctor Dolittle, so I guess expanded musicals aren't out of the picture. I myself am hoping for a Charlie and the Chocolate factory (1971) and a Wizard of Oz expansion.

I would also add that Disney has released quite a few expanded animated musicals. As for why our specialty labels rarely do them, I would guess they know their audience. It's the same reason that they don't release a lot of comedy scores, or Gil Melle scores.

Rhino released a 2-CD set of the complete tracks to WIZARD OF OZ, including alternates and outtakes, and a book with lots of text and color photos.

Well, and there's Gigi, and American in Paris, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Harvey Girls, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc.

And of course so many not expanded or released on CD, like Scrooge etc.

I was kinda shocked when Doolittle and Fiddler on the Roof were released. Don't have much expectations for movie musical releases.

An expanded "Victor/Victoria" has 31 tracks, 14 of which were previously unreleased, including a rehearsal track of "The Shady Dame From Seville".

I guess we've gotten more expansions than I realized. Do they all include the complete orchestral score?
Of course Disney has its Legacy Collection but I was asking about the live action musicals. I didn't make that clear.

I assume West Side Story and Mary Poppins aren't complete? At the risk of "What I really want", I would love to see complete Camelot, Slipper and the Rose, WSS, All That Jazz among others.

Sound of Music was expanded many, many times, but frustratingly none have been complete. I would also love to see full song/underscore releases of South Pacific, Hello Dolly and Sweet Charity.

Our limited experience is that they don't sell very well.

Weren't we told that the underscore tracks from HELLO, DOLLY! were lost or deteriorated?

I would like to see an edition of "Paint Your Wagon" with both the rerecording (only the "Finale" is from the soundtrack) and the original soundtrack, as well as the requested "Scrooge" with the rerecording (only the "Overture" is from soundtrack) and the original soundtrack as well, which has some unreleased music.

I'm grateful GOODBYE MR CHIPS, TOM SAWYER (even with compromised sound) and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF all got Deluxe Edition releases before nobody bought them.

The latter. Not long after the release of LLL’s Doctor Dolittle, Mike Matessino confirmed that the tapes for that and Star! had deteriorated beyond repair. In another thread, he also mentioned that the tapes for South Pacific (one of my most wanted musical expansions) were MIA.

Some may consider "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T." and "The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm" to be musicals. Both received expansive releases from FSM.

Singin' in the Rain got a very nice expansion on Rhino, though granted that was 27 years ago.

I'd also guess that musicals are harmed by the fact that most of them have already had a basic album release which, for the majority of fans, was enough for them. Along those lines, the amount of underscore in those films is probably minimal making the subset of film score fans smaller than normal. And within that subset of film score fans, they also have to be musical fans.

Compare that to a non-musical film score and while you no longer have an audience segment of "musical fans" you likely have a much broader segment of film score fans who are interested, so there's likely more people who would buy an expanded non-musical film score.

Perhaps another way to look at it is musical songs don't really reward deep listening - everything is kind of just there to hear. But a non-musical film score offers much higher rewards for deep listening. On this note, my theory is that musical scores would actually attract more film score fans if they had versions of the songs with lyrics removed. For the Disney animated films I've heard versions of the songs with the vocals removed and the supporting instrumental compositions sound phenomenal and rewarding because you can hear much more clearly how the music is carefully crafted to create gaps for the vocals. But all of that gets buried once the vocals are added.

So maybe they can try to release non-vocal versions of the orchestration underneath?

Well there are also fans of both musicals and film cores. I have really no problem with a score made of songs, as long as it is good. I wouldn't wish to have the vocals removed.

I do listen to a lot of classical music and a lot of film scores, but very few musicals. I do like some operas by Mozart, Wagner, and Verdi, but comparatively few musicals. Though I love West Side Story and My Fair Lady, so I'm not averse to musicals per se. I am not sure how much overlap is between the audience of film music and musicals. I know the overlap between classical music and film music is rather minuscule; I should know, I belong to it (I know there are a few more here on this board). Not sure if the musical/film score overlap is any larger.
