Film Fest Gent presents:
LAURENCE ROSENTHAL: MUSIC FOR FILM AND TELEVISION
Performed by Brussels Philharmonic
Conducted by Dirk Brossé

Available on CD at https://shop.filmfestival.be/collections/cd

American composer Laurence Rosenthal is one of the giants of film, television and theatre music. His career in film and television composition, which began in the 1950s, spans no less than six decades and has resulted in numerous accolades and awards, including two Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, seven Emmy Awards (with an additional six nominations) and the World Soundtrack Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023. Highly regarded among film music critics and composers alike, Laurence Rosenthal is an immensely talented and versatile composer, who has enhanced films and television series time and again with superbly crafted scores.

For this historic album, the first rerecording entirely devoted to Laurence Rosenthal’s oeuvre, most of the suites have been newly created, based on the original manuscripts in the composer’s archive. Highlights include substantial suites from Arthur Penn’s The Miracle Worker, the Oscar-nominated score for Becket, the composer’s epic western score for The Return of a Man Called Horse, the Saturn Award-nominated score for Clash of the Titans, the miniseries Mussolini: The Untold Story and George Lucas’s The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles.

Released by Silva Screen Records during the 50th anniversary edition of Film Fest Gent in October 2023, the album Laurence Rosenthal: Music for Film and Television is the 18th title in Film Fest Gent’s continuing series of annual film music albums, containing new studio recordings with Brussels Philharmonic and Dirk Brossé that give some of the world’s greatest scores an extended afterlife beyond the films. Previous recordings feature the work of Craig Armstrong, Angelo Badalamenti, Marco Beltrami, Terence Blanchard, Carter Burwell, Mychael Danna, Cliff Martinez, Mark Isham, Alan Silvestri, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Shigeru Umebayashi and Gabriel Yared.

The tracklisting looks superb. Really great selection from Rosenthal's incredible career. The Mussolini score is a real hidden gem in his catalog.

And the Fantasy Island theme! I would be sold on that alone.

It was an amazing evening dedicated to Laurence Rosenthal and Nicola Piovani. From Rosenthal they played Return of the Man Called Horse, Clash of the Titans, The Miracle Worker, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (Theme and Ireland) and Becket. The highlight for me was The Miracle of the Pump from The Miracle Worker. What an exquisite piece of music wonderfully played by the Brussels Philharmonic.

And on top of that he even participated in the signing session in the afternoon. It was truly a pleasure and an honor to get to talk to him.

Wish I had been there. On the other hand, I've had the album for a few days now, listened through it a couple of times. Good stuff all around.

Lifetime Achievement Award Laurence Rosenthal | WSAwards 2023

This has just been released:

Robert Townson in Ghent (Belgium) presenting Larry Rosenthal his Lifetime Achievement Award - Oct 21th, 2023

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHKKYp-w5mg

It is our honour and pleasure to welcome here the first recipient of the Award tonight who in a long and distinguished career has worked in pretty much every corner of the music world, as composer and arranger in television, film, theatre and the concert hall. His first film credit was nearly 70 years ago, in 1955 - a film called Yellowneck about the American Civil War. In the 60s, two of his scores were Oscar nominated - for Becket and the adaptation of the musical ‘Man of La Mancha’; and his incidental music was being heard regularly in Broadway theatres, as well as on the concert stage. Television became a major part of his life, winning seven Emmys for classic miniseries like ‘Peter the Great', 'Anastasia’ and ‘The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles’. His brings integrity, grace, unlimited imagination and enormous skill to everything he writes for whatever medium. And, just a week or so before his 97th birthday, we are so honoured to welcome to Ghent, Laurence Rosenthal.

Well, yes and no.

I recommend all of the albums that are done for visiting composers that primarily work in an orchestral idiom. Performance and sound quality are always top notch from Brossé and the orchestra, and the suite arrangements are elegant.

However, some of the albums done for composers who are more known for their electronic work (or various hybrids), haven't always translated as well, IMO. I have some issues with their albums of Sakamoto, Badalamenti, Martinez, Isham and so on.

Is this one even out yet? Normally, these albums get released in time for the Gent Film Festival, but the festival’s over and this album has not been released on music platforms and as far as I can see the CD isn’t available yet. Strange.

I bought the CD at the festival so it's definitely out. And it's a magnificent recording.

The concert must have been a magical experience for all those who attended. Laurence Rosenthal is an absolute treasure, god bless him. Wonderful to see that YouTube clip, he is utterly amazing for an almost-97 year old, long may he live on. What an incredibly talented and yet truly modest and gracious man he is. Absolutely one of the all-time greats. Looking forward to this CD!
