There are three eps where Frontiere's music is much more dramatically effective in the episodes where they were used as library cues.

The 'love theme' originally composed/used for THE HUMAN FACTOR was memorably re-used in the classic ep A FEASIBILITY PROJECT. You can hear it at the powerful finale when the abductees hold hands.

A fantastic piece of music.

Like wise, CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT features a lovely harp solo that we hear again at the epilogue for THE CHILDREN OF SPIDER COUNTY. The lush, soft focus photography, the poignancy of the young lovers, the poetic CV intoning "...soft hands and strong love". One of the few truly happy endings in the whole series.
THE SIXTH FINGER also used this piece at the climax when David Mccallum steps out of the chamber and touches the tear of his girlfriend.

TOL stands as one of the best scored and edited series in tv history!!!!

bruce r. marshall

ps the liner notes contain a minor error about THF episode. Of course, the album producer couldn't possibly know what it is. And i aint tellin'!
smile

PSS there is also misinformation about the plot in the notes for THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER BORN.

Maybe i should have produced the album.
ahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a link to an article about Schow's genesis for the book.

I've got the first edition of that book. Very dog-eared and well-read after 20 years. I'd like to get the updated 2nd edition but I can't seem to find it anywhere for less than about 1 million dollars!

Ironic that the 2nd ed. is more valuable than the 1st.

I am thinking about selling my 2 volumes of episode lore published by Ted Rypel in THE OUTER LIMITS:AN ILLUSTRATED REVIEW.

Published in 1978 they contain reviews and commentary of eps 1-24 of season one, Plus, lengthy interviews with Joe Stefano and Anthony Lawrence, illustrations, photos and more.

lmk if interested in obtaining these collectors items.

I agree with all of that. There were some extraordinarily astute tracking choices made for the show. Tracked episodes like The Invisibles are remarkable for giving the impression that their scores were specially composed for them. It says a lot about the highly defined character of the series (its rhythms, pace, and general textures) that episodes could be tracked so seamlessly while retaining their individuality as dramas.

A good non-Frontiere example is Van Eps' great cue Dive#2 which fits perfectly in Moonstone and Children of Spider County. Better in fact than its original placement in Tourist Attraction.

The Outer Limits (1st season) was one of those rare shows where everything just clicked into place, and very nearly all of the time. This was all due to the creative authorship of Stevens and Stefano. Pity they didn't go on to do more together.

Charles or Bruce,

Can you check your copy of THE OUTER LIMITS COMPANION. There is an episode which is known by another title and it's not THE GALAXY BEING. I believe it may have been TOURIST ATTRACTION, FUN AND GAMES, or SECOND CHANCE.

Bargain, my eye.
The Studio has screwed you with that "Outer Limits" swindle.
The prints are not restored, no audio options, no extras (trailers, promos, audio commentaries, interviews) and you have supported the lousy politics of splitted sets.
David J. Schow has spotted all the flaws and how MGM spits on the face of the customers with these DVD sets:
"Video*WATCHDog", n° 89 and n° 102, November 2002 and December 2003, articles by David J. Schow

Well, the only other choice was to watch my old VHS copies which I still have, and they do not come with any extras and are not restored.

Personally, I think all dvd releases -- be it film or television -- should be remastered with extras. I am willing to pay the price and do support them.

I used to buy the complete season 1 in one set back in 2002:
it was double sided, with CC, and they made a cheap restoration with a software that David J. Schow described as a "Photoshop-like" rendition, in short they boosted the contrast and created noise in the dark scale of the picture.
The correct restoration is executed from the 35 negative prints and not from the transfers whose masters were old prints, overlit by ABC network back then because they were scared that the audience could not see the show due to the fact that 1960's TV sets were technically poor with a limited ability to recapture the shades of grey.

David J. Schow is despised by MGM and was never called to participate in the elaboration of the DVD sets.

Anyone with minimal film knowledge knows that a print from the original source negative in 35mm is far superior than a transfer, other wise known as a "dupe." All David pointed out the faults of the releases in his column and other articles. Did he tell you he is despised by MGM? I can give you his contact info and you can write to him yourself.

There was a big difference in watching television back then because most of us started out with black and white televisions.

I know the man. He was never contacted by MGM which implied their scorn. He even gave me the list of flaws from the DVD booklet (2002 DVD edition). Please read the reference above to get the technical aspects of the shallow restoration done by computer.
