Been waiting 30 years for it! Limited edition was beyond superb, but several key elements were missing as stated by Lukas. I'd like to add my own odd tweak. Track 13 'Zachary Makes His Move"- The hissing, steam-like sounds were a major part of the elevator shaft scene in the film and were hardly audible on the limited edition. Now we can hear them at last in all their hissing, steaming glory! It's this attention to minor details that make us crazy folk happy. Bravo Mr.Kendall! I say Bravo!

I haven't picked up the new edition. It sounds like you're a major fan of this movie. I might have to get out the DVD when I have time and see if I can pick up on what you're talking about.

Welcome to the board.

This film is a guilty pleasure; lots of fun but wow. I love the dialog they gave Heston, it swung from the sharp and chilling:

"Build coffins, that's all you'll need"

to the hilariously bad:

"Okay baby, hitch up yer drawers!"

The music is a ton of fun, and keps the film from getting to wacko, altho the cheerful happy dappy mucis over the shot of Heston's dead, blood soaked body was always a bit strange. It's like someone wanted us to think "Yaaay! Christ!"

Now I know why William Shatner never had a big career in movies: we already had Heston. And the screen ain't big enough for 'em both.

Yes, I am a major fan. But that doesn't stop me from also seeing the films flaws (of which there are many). Still, It is far superior to that recent "adaptation" which seems to be a major remake of OMEGA MAN than the actual source novel. I've done a point by point comparison between the two films and I can only assume the I AM LEGEND writers watched T.O.M. and assumed it was the book. I can't find ANY relationship to the novel whatsoever. I waited 30 years for a true adaptaion, looks like I'll be waiting 30 more!!! (and they want to film a sequel!!!!)

Never cared for this "hip" remake of THE LAST MAN ON EARTH starring Vincent Price in one of his better roles. But the music to OMEGA MAN is still very cool.

Yep, right there with you!! Wish someone would get this novel done RIGHT!

The music for Omega man is one of my favorites though and gets played at least twice a week!

While considered an Italian 'cheapie' by most,(with great use of canned music for the soundtrack. Any chance for an article on Canned Music or this soundtrack?), this film stands closest to the novel by far and in some respects is quite effective in delivering on the horror and loneliness. The latter two attempts fail miserably to accomplish this with Mr. Smith's version (I ROBOT LEGEND) the least scary of all.

Also of note, I AM LEGEND the novel is quoted by George Romero(my own personal conversation with the man) as being his inspiration to make one of the greatest, genre defining, horror films of all time- Night of the Living Dead.

So is the previous FSM edition of The Omega Man "worthless" now? wink

Believe me, the $19.95 I paid for it in 2002 has been repaid many, many times...

Nothing wrong with owning BOTH. (I do) There is enough of a difference between the two, especially in the re-mix. The center channel is more focused and the clarity much better on Unlimited. The tracks just seem richer sounding. as for the original CD, the booklet alone is worth the price! All the research and comments add immeasurably to the enjoyment of the disk. I often read along as I listen, (then watch the movie.)

*WARNING* CRAP ALERT!!!

"I AM OMEGA" is set to premiere on SCI-FI,(soon to be Sy-Fy) channel. This is a terrible movie. Don't waste your time. You can never recover it.

You have been warned.

I like the little Easter egg that comes at the end of the first edition. Lukas left it off 2.0 to keep 1.0 special.

Believe me, the $19.95 I paid for it in 2002 has been repaid many, many times...

Same here. The score is unique, raw, macho, electric, and exhilarating. If you saw this movie as a kid, then it takes on an even more powerful, deep lifelong resonance. And the fact that it never came out on vinyl made it a super-grail.

It was perhaps the best music money I ever spent, and one of these days I might buy 2.0, even on my budget, just to "have it all."

Remember how the FSM mag's lettercol buzzed for months after that initial release? Effusive praise all around, with readers telling their tales about how Grainer's score moved them and how bizarre that it never saw release. I loved reading those stories. The Omega Man was one of those saturday afternoon movies that local, independent stations often aired. Seeing the film (as well as stuff like The Mechanic and The Swimmer) reminds me of those saturday afternoons...*gets washed away in nostalgia*

Just do as I did: order the Unlimited 2.0 version from SAE and ask Ed to throw in one of the original Omega Man booklets. (They had extra ones to give away as of a few weeks ago.) You get the best of both!

I thought for years that I was the only one who tape recorded this movie's score in the 70's on the late show with a handheld microphone. And then multiple times over the years with successively better equipment, only to rush order FSM's release back in 2000. Learning from the mail FSM has received that this was a fairly common response to Ron Grainer's score makes me wonder if there was, perhaps, something strange and subliminal at work in the music! Anyways, I'm really impressed with the sound on this remastered pressing and I'll be ordering it asap. Thanks FSM -- I've waited 33 years for this!

One of my favorit scores and movies. I'm a great Heston fan and really love his scifi achievements, along with the 'omega man' by Richard Matheson there's the great soylent green by author Harry Harrison and Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle (famous from the bridge on the river kwai). All films have wonderfull scores but Ron Grainer's score is the best for me. The main title music for soylent green is a real gem too!!!
If there would be any music left from a Charlton Heston movie that should be published it would be 'the Mountain Men' from Michel Legrand.....a very funy movie, but that's something completely different....
