FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC is a terrific horror score, yet also works perfectly as a dramatic score. The main theme is one of the most achingly sad yet beautiful pieces of film music I've ever heard.
The Intrada CD is long out of print, and fairly expensive on the secondary market.
With the recent release of HAUNTED SUMMER (which I just purchased) might someone see fit to issue a new CD of this score?
I agree Sarge. I was lucky to buy the Intrada from a friend who bought a huge collection and offered it to me. It's a quintessential score for Young fans. When I listen to the main title, I always make a link to his fly II theme, dunno why; that one is even more grimm and dark, whereas the flowers in the attic has that sparkle of hope.
I haven't seen the movie though but I haven't read good things about it.
Love this score! Does anybody have a decent resolution cover you could post so I can put it into iTunes? Can't seem to find anything bigger than 300x300.

I had this score on CD in the early 90's and I gave it away thinking it would be plentiful for years to come. Well ten years later, I bought it form a collector for a very steep price and nothing, but nothing will pry this masterwork from my hands.

This score and Murder in the First are my favourite Young scores. For a guy who carved out a career doing those Hellraiser scores, he really was able to write some beautifully affected music for these two films. Really stunning work. Especially his string writing in both.

Couldn't agree more - the boy soprano thing is very effective, but it's the string writing that holds this score together.
WONDERFUL score and even though I own the old, I think, Intrada issue, I'd still buy another one in a heartbeat!!
A little dmd cover from my archives, from when I met him at the Varese bash in 2008!
I hope as many of you folks get the chance to meet Chris in person he is quite possibly the COOLEST guy on Earth. So darn nice and he TRULY appreciates his fans. You gotta love that.
Even though they're quite different in style and instrumentation, Young's 1987-88 scores for FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC and HAUNTED SUMMER are two scores that, for me, define the term "haunting music".
Just saw the movie and it's a stinker. If there ever was a Goldsmith award for scoring the worst movie with the best score possible Chris Young should have it. There was absolutely nothing good in this movie aside from Chris' music, which made me get through it. The acting was terrible, the cinematography and framing was terrible, the locations and sets were terrible and the story more so... dreadful movie.
It's a fine score, with Young's usual classy approach to crappy films--he's directing a better movie, just not shooting it with film.
Fans of this should try to get HIDER IN THE HOUSE. And I will of course have to make my ten thousandth recommendation of THE DARK HALF.
Young is kind of the John Barry of horror scores, bringing melodic themes to a genre that's too often about abrassive blasts meant to 'shock' or screeching strings.
