Took a listen today to Across The Sea Of Time, a score I hadn't played for quite a while. For obvious reasons, it, among many other John Barry scores, has been on my mind of late.
I had a question all those years ago regarding the track "Flight Over New York," also known, of course, as the theme to Moviola, the documentary about the maestro himself. So Moviola is from 1992, while Across The Sea Of Time is from 1995. Was Barry working on the music to ATSOT back in 1992, or did he decide to reuse a theme 3 years later because it suited the scene?
Regardless, this is a now-rare and oddly overlooked gem in the John Barry catalogue. If you can get a copy of this and not go broke in the process, it's well worth it, in my opinion.
Your thoughts? Anyone actually see the film for which this score was made? I believe it was an IMAX presentation.
P.S. Try putting your copy into iTunes and note the composer name they give: Jeff Barry. Woops.

I have had this score for years, and like you I recently pulled it off the shelf and rediscovered it. Beautiful music, fitting cleanly into that sweeping mode of Barry's.

Meaning no disrespect and being a rabid Barry fan I have never liked it.

When Barry was preparing a collection of themes performed by the RPO in 1992 he used this theme as his title track - the album was called Moviola. As far as I know it had nothing to do with the documentary about him.
The resulting CD was the companion to the documentary. It was, if memory serves, released simultaneous to the PBS airings of the special. Anyone?
Thanks everyone! I'm actually a big Streisand fan (letting Barry go, notwithstanding, grrrr) and had noooo idea the piece was written for The Prince Of Tides. Cool to know.

For anyone who doesn't have exhorbitant sums at their disposal for an ebay'ed copy of this, it is available on Amazon.com and iTunes as digital downloads - not ideal, but better than not having this wonderful score.

One of the best Barry scores ever (What was Streisand thinking?) and applied to one of the best 3D movies ever made. By comparing and contrasting New York City scenes in black and white from the early twentieth century with new color shots of the same locations today, the movie actually does give an uncanny sense of time travel. Exquisite.

One of the best Barry scores ever (What was Streisand thinking?)
I thought it was only the one theme that was written for The Prince Of Tides. As much of a Barry fan as I am, however, I don't think that theme really suits the film. It almost suits it, but not quite. In the end, James Newton Howard's score works perfectly for that film, a wonderful Americana score that balanced nicely in the finished movie.
That said, this is a terrific work!

I'm a huge fan of this score too, and while it's been extremely difficult to track down this title on video (I believe there was only a VHS release of it), I thought I'd pass along that it's airing several times this month on Sony Movie Channel HD.
I don't know how many outlets carry SMC but it's on Directv:
