Originally when I'd heard a new release from Quartet Records was imminent of these two Rota scores, I wasn't going to order it. I had an import of ROMA already, and since the first time I'd heard 'SATYRICON', I'd disliked it. But I gambled on the purchase as ROMA was one of my favorites, and it was the complete underscore. I'm glad I did! I suppose over the many years since Rota wrote his Satyricon score, it's somehow grown on me. It's still an ecclectic piece of music by Rota, but it's got some marvelous sounds not heard in any other soundtrack I can think of. And Rota's ROMA is just a total gem. Even though I miss the original MGM/United Artist release of that album, this one is very satisfying. I do miss that UA version because (as noted in the new release booklet) it was a 'souvenir album' of songs and a little bit of score, I enjoyed it. Someday, ALL the music and ALL the songs can be incorporated on a 2 cd set, but untill then this new release is a must have for Rota fans.

Got it in the mail today - can't wait to hear it. I returned the previous release because it was so obviously and annoyingly a needle drop - complete with deep turntable rumble and the sound of the needle hitting the vinyl! Ha! They say this one's from the master tapes - yay!
I think I've listened to my "Satyricon" LP twice in 35 years. (I didn't see the film until 2 years ago.) But I bought the CD for "Roma."
In comparing the track lists between the "Satryicon" CD and LP, I notice that the LP has one additional track (21 tracks for the LP vs. 20 for the CD). Track No. 20 on the LP, called "Monkey Dance," does not appear on the CD. But since the actual tracks on the LP are not separated, it's hard to tell how long that track is.
I hope you all noticed the Miklos Rozsa referencing at 5:27 in the clip? The main theme from 'Quo Vadis?' based on one version of the plainsong 'Libera Me Domine'. Used frequently in 'La Roma'.
As regards 'Satyricon' mentioned above, it's worth mentioning that half of that score is source cues from Japanese, African and Indonesian sources. It's one way of suggesting 'authenticity', by employing ethnic music of today that might be seen as at a similar level of development as ancient ethnic music. I think that's a good score.
Rota's concert music from non-filmic sources is excellent and should be better appreciated.

As far as I'm concerned, Fellini-Satyricon is the greatest film ever made, and I must have seen it 20 times. Undoubtably the original list on the LP/CD is confused. The names of the songs DO NOT fit the film's scenes. One example: Track 2 is NOT "Il Giardino Delle Delizie (Garden Of Delights)", track 3 IS (in fact track 3 is a piece of music from Tanzania!). I have the DVD of the movie and I went step by step. Still, it's almost impossible to get things straight, because in the movie the music doesn't always begin and finish as on the LP/CD, and is covered-over not only with dialog but also with singing. There is also more original ethnic music in the film that does not appear on the LP/CD. I searched the web for info about these mistakes (that were never fixed), and could find nothing.
On top of what I just posted over an Hour ago, I did find out that Nino Rota didn't write all the music: Aside from much "ethnic" music, there is use of avant garde electronic compositions by Ilhan Mimaroglu, Andrew Rudin, Carlo Rusticelli and Tod Dockstader. Why the hell this is not mentioned on the LP/CD is beyond me.
I finally decided to order this CD. I haven't seen the films and don't own any previous releases, but for only $6.95, I couldn't resist. The only other Rota score that I'm familiar with is Romeo and Juliet, an all-time fave.

Well, need I really say "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part II"?! Definitely "Il Gattopardo" (The Leopard) - Rota at his operatic best! If you're on vinyl try finding the Varese release! And I would certainly add "Rocco and His Brothers" and "Death on the Nile"!
As for the Fellini scores maybe you should try first a compilation like Silva's "Fellini/Rota" ('70s renditions under the baton of Carlo Savina - I grew up listening to this one!) or the newer "The Symponic Fellini/Rota" (the Czechs play here) to check if it's a sound world that suites you and to wet your appetite for the full scores!
I've got the original 2cd version of FELLINI -ROTA which contains SATYRICON, ROMA and TOBY DAMMIT. In the Quartet press blurb it says SATYRICON was mastered from an LP for that one. My question is just is there a substantial difference in the new recording that would be worth a re-purchase for anyone that has the original. Thanks.

I've seen "Roma" twice from 35mm prints and I'm quite fond of the movie. I'm, however, still confused by the CD releases of this title. There seems to be an UA LP which never has been on CD, but even more confusing is that there was an "extended" CD on the Verita Note label (which predates the Quartet two-fer):
