Time to explain (to myself) why I interrogated Schiffy so closely up yonder in this thread when he talked about this score doing nothing for him, and why I'm starting to regret my earlier enthusiasm. Because now that I'm listening to the expansion, it's not doing much for me either. I've been falling out of love with listening to most full scores for a while now, and it's turning out that this expansion is tough for me to get through. I keep checking the playlist, thinking, hey is this the end? Nope, five more tracks to go. Sigh. Listening to the whole I'm finding that the initial 30-minute suite really was enough for me after all. I keep wanting to switch over to one of Goldsmith's 90's Star Treks, or something else from the period a bit more varied and a bit less by the numbers. As someone who knows by heart all of Goldsmith's action and suspense licks from the original Twilight Zone scores to Star Trek Nemesis, the more of this I hear the more routine it feels. I'm still delighted this was released, hope the others get released too. But it may be that I am not the audience for these things any more.

Thanks for asking, Thing. It's funny, I thought I'd really enjoy this expansion too, as I've always enjoyed the 30 minute album (though honestly hadn't listened to it for years). But I've tried both foreground and background listening, and this just feels like more of the same in a way that I didn't expect. Pick an individual cue and I enjoy it, but play five in a row and I'm exhausted. I don't usually write about scores that are not interesting to me (or not as interesting to me as I thought they were), because I don't like raining on the parade, and, frankly, who cares if I'm not interested? But after my earlier enthusiasm it turns out I do think that this score suffers more from the "been there, done that" quality that Goldsmith couldn't really avoid in scoring yet another middling thriller after having done so for decades. So I wanted to reflect my changing views rather than an enthusiasm I no longer feel. I do think it is more to do with an evolution in my listening preferences. But the funny thing is I've really enjoyed the recent expansions of BTTF 2 and 3, even digging the alternates. And there are still many long scores of Goldsmith's that I love listening to, including The Shadow from just a couple of years before this, and the 90's Star Trek expansions right on through to Nemesis. Whereas others - Congo, River Wild, Deep Rising, this one - just aren't doing it for me. But whatever - I'm glad plenty of folks love it, and I'm not sorry I bought it, just bemused that it isn't grabbing me.

Cause I'm disappointed is why! I wanted to like the darn thing! (But I am getting a kick out of the expansion of Star Trek Insurrection right now, so still love me some 90's Goldsmith.)

It's not just you Sean - I'm a Goldsmith die die die hard, and certain ones aren't as captivating for me either, including a couple you named. But how can this be, Jerry was a god among men!??! For me, I just chalk it up to age-nostalgia (I knew and loved the old albums, the expansions are a shock to the system) & time - I find myself thankful to have the expansion, but sometimes moreso that the old album is included, and I tend to go to that more often than not. Especially not having 2hrs. to devote to a set, when there are so many others waiting in the wings, with the recent deluge of CD releases. Still, I keep buying, like I will on this one, 'cos there is some great action missing on the old. Jerry did put together a great program on that though (theme/suspense/action repeat thrice), we have to admit. This is good therapy! ;-) -Sean (Captain Obvious)
