Not that anyone cares, but if they add some newly composed song OR have some pop version of an existing song playing over the end credits, I’m gonna lose it!

I had hoped that Sondheim would've written a new song - even one for the end credits!

Oh, I didn't know Zimmer scored this film! And those accents, rather thick. Like Hispanics speaking the way they think non-Hispanics think they sound. The fake accents in the original sound more realistic.

I'm sure, in the Grand Tradition of David Newman scored films, there will be NO score tracks on this edition.
Maybe one, as he is wont on many of his other song/musical CD releases?
Perhaps a FYC score edition will be issued, in the coming weeks.

(Just thinking out loud)

Hollywood Records has announced the official soundtrack album Steven Spielberg’s new film adaptation of West Side Story. The album features the songs from the movie originally written for the stage musical by Leonard Bernstein and with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

The record is produced by David Newman who arranged and adapted Bernstein’s original score for the film, Jeanine Tesori who supervised the cast on vocals and music supervisor Matt Sullivan who serves as executive music producer. Gustavo Dudamel conducted the New York Philharmonic during the first recording sessions in 2019, with additional recording by the Los Angeles Philharmonic done the following year.

The soundtrack will be released digitally this Friday, December 3 (in two version, including a Dolby Atmos Music edition) and physically next Friday, December 10. Interesting that Cool is placed before the Quintet rather than after the Rumble as in the original film and is a duet between Tony and I’m assuming Riff rather than an ensemble number as in the original play and film (this new album seems to keep the film placement of Gee Officer Krupke) and that Somewhere is sung by Moreno rather than the lovers. I’m not sure what to make of it, especially the last observation. Also, not familiar with that Shark number after the Prologue. Is it a new addition to the score?

Good remarks, just a small correction: at this time of the show, in the libretto, the song "Somewhere" is attributed to "a girl" singing in the street while lovers dance, not to lovers themselves.

Thank you for pointing that out. Haven’t read the libretto since high school (my high school pairs it with the play’s inspiration, Romeo and Juliet) so I’m a bit more familiar with the film.

Yes the original movie differed from the play in this regard. Also the play featured an extended ballet sequence with Somewhere. I wonder what the new version will do with it.

Yes, this ballet is missing from the CD... and most likely (in whole or in part) from the film - it's not justified from the point of view of the progression of the plot. I haven't seen the show on stage for very long, but often such numbers are designed just for fun, to allow singers to save their voice, and/or to occupy the front stage while the set for the next is installed behind... what a film does not need.

That said, I really like the clip. This respect for the score is a pleasure to hear, when one might have feared inflated orchestrations, supposedly modernized. Thanks for that.
