Played yesterday the Aleph Records (Schifrin's label) release of "Dirty Harry", for suite purposes. Some things became very apparent: there are a few noticeable edits in the score, indicating likely covering up bad places in the tapes, or cues not being presented as recorded, but some sort of listening experience. Take the cue from the opening of the film with the pool assassination. On the CD two or three tracks down, there is the cue again, this time (mostly) presented as apparently recorded. The opening scene appears to be an editorial job, with two additions made -- a guiro interlude and an orchestral build to crescendo with the end. And I'm not talking about the tracked opening chimes. And it's not a matter of sounding the same -- I imported both cues into Audacity and laid them over the same parts -- it's the same track, edited up like I said. And the orchestral part at the end, was either recorded hot or mixed too loudly for the Aleph release, as you can see it's brickwalled at the top; lowering the level reveals the brickwall where it was destroyed. On the plus side, we got alternates, a couple vocal takes, and if you care for it, a song (placed annoyingly inside the score presentation). In the end, because of one or two bad edits on the CD presentation, and overall lack of recorded material, what I came up with are two suites with issues, but perfect enough, and one cue which aside from raising some volumes levels with the envelope tool, I left as is. It's about fourteen and-a-half minutes of total music for my listening pleasure. I was never able to attain further DH releases from his label due to money issues, so I have no idea if other titles suffer from above described edits. Oh, and it sounds fantastic sound wise.
