Plus, for Lord's sake, it's the Beastie Boys. If they don't stand a chance of being remembered 300 years from now then who does?

Uh tons of better artists. Then again most of the popular artists being used in movies never impressed me one bit.

Saw the movie again and came away loving it even more. God help me, this may be my second favorite Trek film -- right behind Wrath of Khan.

The score still doesn't hold up all that well in film unfortunately. Much of the underscore is mixed very quietly. Krall's theme doesn't get a full airing in the film up until the very end. However, I've grown to appreciate Giacchino's use of a solo, mournful trumpet. It makes sense given what we learn about the character -- as if it's for a once-noble warrior now lost in the stars.

I can't wait for the expanded release, however -- if only for the cue when Spock finds the picture of the Prime Universe cast. That rendition of the original theme gave me goosebumps.

I'm waiting for the deluxe version of Star Trek Beyond Beyond.

Beyond Star Trek Beyond?

Could be. Hey, they can put the words wherever they want on the album cover so long as they put the score out C&C.

They still can't make a reboot Star Trek movie without referencing the old cast or stealing ideas from Wrath of Khan, Search For Spock, The Voyage Home or Generations. Nothing new here other than a silly and tiresome motorcycle gag. (And you thought Picard's dune buggy ride was bad?!) Regarding the score, Giacchino is good with drama and emotional scenes, but his action music is sadly generic and lacking.

I enjoyed it a lot. I'll probably go back and see it again in 3D.

Well, orchestral generic action music is hardly as generic as the predominantly non-orchestral generic that the vast majority of movies today have...

I've been a Trek fan since the 25th Anniversary and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed Beyond and would rank it as the best of the nuTrek films. It's certainly isn't perfect, but I finally felt that the crew really clicked in this one and enjoyed the callbacks to the Star Trek canon with the film's villain.

As for the score, aside from the lovely Yorktown material which acts as sort of a theme for the federation in my mind, I haven't found too much that's stuck with me. Maybe it's just me but I find Giacchino's action material to be just shrill and pretty unmemorable and I'm getting pretty sick of his inevitable and unsubtle use of the choir in film finales to push things fully over the top. I really enjoyed his work on Trek '09, but it's been diminishing returns for me since then. Maybe it's time for a new composer next time?

Chris.

Part of me thinks the action oriented sequences tend to go through so much edits and changes, they leave no room for the man to get creative about them. Maybe if he's given a locked-picture and a decent amount of time, he could well surprise us.

Terrific movie, really fun and emotional - and the score is fantastic as well.

Love it!

Very good point. This is quite likely a factor for a lot of different scores these days.

Saw it. Loved it. HATED the villain's motivation. (What's WRONG with you people?)

Score: Nice job. But I'll be listening to Thank Your Lucky Stardate over and over and over.

I enjoyed the Classical Music gag. (Even if I hate the music. Lots of people don't.)

With you on this one. Shrill is the word.

I was hoping for a brief nod to Horner's Spock theme when Spock finds out that Ambassador Spock had died or for a brief hint of TMP theme when Spock finds the picture of the Prime Universe cast. Although the original theme in the latter scene works nearly as well. While on the subject of the former scene, wouldn't the news of such an important member of the Federation be all over the place? I find it hard to believe that Kirk didn't learn of his passing until they returned from the mission.

After 3 viewings this weekend I've reassessed my original thoughts and would go ***½ out of 4. Too much action and basically another Fast and Furious? No way. There's a very subtle thread that lines the movie - the loss of family (fathers and father figures in particular) and the damage isolation can have on a person's psyche. Not to mention the smallest dose of social commentary on having Military Leaders in charge. I really think Pegg and Jung wrote a home run.

•Exploration of the Human Condition
•Space
•Social Commentary
•Sci Fi Action

And tying the Kelvin Timeline together is MG who in just two notes can tell us where we are and who we're with. Trek 14 will involve George Kirk and I sure hope MG's there to keep it consistent.

Saw ST beyond this week and enjoyed it a lot more than I did the first two due to it finally being a standalone adventure. No rehashing of previous TOS material, if anything this felt more like it barrowed from TNG/Voyager lore which I didn't mind. Two things I disliked; the villain and the fact they need to keep referencing the alternate TOS crew; for f*** sake you've finally made a great standalone movie and your cast has proven they can carry the mantle, enough already with the kissing ass of TOS actors. Apparently it only gets them riled up in the press anyway. Move on already!

Aside from that the movie really impressed me with the world building and alien races, so much so it made me overlook some weaker plot elements and Kirk's ongoing daddy issues; enough with that as well please! I want to see Kirk be allowed to be Kirk and not James Bond who has to get M's approval. I liked how on Thundera the crew is split up and Jaylah has to be the best written additional character to Star Trek since Alfre Woodard in FC. I hope she will return in a next installment.

I liked the score in the movie but haven't heard it on its own. I did catch a lot of nods to Goldsmith (particularly TMP) and for the most part enjoyed the action material. I didn't like the previous score but this one I might get if there's a deluxe release.

So... Krall. I knew ahead of seeing it that Idris Elba was under the makeup but even so I found this villain unintimidating and confusing. Ruafu light. Why in these PC times do villains have to be troubled souls whose screen time feels like they are visiting their shrink? What happened to truly mean villains who take delight in their terror, are entertainingly vile and crude? Also, why waste someone like Elba under makeup? This felt like Ron Perlman in Nemesis all over again.

Again, the movie made up for these flaws with a fun adventure and lots of impressive sequences. I like this FnF director, the movie looks amazing and I didn't catch a lot of flare.

So for me easily the best reboot crew movie and I will admit that this premise of throwing the crew into a truly fresh alien adventure is one I've wanted to see for such along time. Enough with the boring Klingon, Romulan, Vulcan disputes; I want to see them truly explore new worlds and alien races and it's here where the movie succeeded most for me.

Looks like Universal Records is releasing the OST in Japan instead of Varese Sarabande!

https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B01K24FFI0

Did Varese not purchase worldwide rights?

Same tracklist, but different cover:

Will the mastering be any different?

Oddly the digital release in Japan was still on Varese....
