I'm writing this more or less to kill time until the set is released, so here's some nostalgic thoughts on "The X-Files", and I hope at least one of you enjoys them. I remember when the show first started and how Fox essentially ignored it while putting their promotional weight behind "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.", a show which, for all its merits, lasted all of a single season. I was 14 when the show first started airing. I didn't get Fox at home, so the first episode I ever actually saw was on a bunny-eared television in an office in a gymnasium complex. I was attending an overnight function for a community service group I was part of, and while all of my other friends were off playing basketball and chasing girls, I was sitting there spellbound. It was the 2nd season episode "One Breath", and what I most vividly remember is the scene where X executes the operative who was trying to steal Scully's blood sample. It was way more brutal than anything I'd ever seen on TV before and I was hooked. Since I didn't get Fox, I somehow convinced a friend of mine to tape the episodes for me. And so every single week it was on, my buddy Nishant hooked me up. Monday morning, I'd get that tape in my hands like it was samizdat and I'd race straight home after school and watch the episode, heart pounding in my throat. I usually watched them two or three times, just to make sure I hadn't missed anything, and then I got onto this new thing called the Internet and I found this newsgroup kind of thing called alt.tv.x-files and I'd argue with all the other nerds. Yeah, I was that guy. I grew up in a very political family and I was already well-versed in the lore of the JFK assassination and Watergate, and to me one of the great strengths of the show as it unfolded was the amount of flexibility the creative team found within the show's format. The main story arc was a constant exercise in leg-pulling but I still went with it. I would argue that the show's greatest strength was not its convoluted "mythology", but the standalone episodes which were frequently innovative, challenging, and enormously risky. I really cannot think of any other show which found room for so many different types of stories and so many varied and unique tones, ranging from broad comedy to straight-up, balls-to-the-wall horror. And that music... my stars, that music. Mark Snow helped me understand that electronic scores could (and should) be taken seriously, and that musical approaches for underscoring need not always incorporate Wagnerian full-orchestra romanticism. "The X-Files" is a show that seems inseparable from its music; it just belongs. It IS "The X-Files". I saw the first movie five times in the theater, just so I'd never forget the thrill of seeing it on the big screen. Not even the Blu-Ray has been able to replicate the stunning cinematography of the film's first few minutes, particularly those as the cavemen first enter the ice cave in search of the alien. The whole film is gorgeous to look at (Ward Russell, yo!) but those shots in particular were absolutely astounding on the big screen. After that, I admit, I kinda lost the faith. Season 5 onward, I was an irregular watcher, but I did catch it from time to time. Every once in a while they'd knock one out of the park ("Bad Blood", "Triangle", "Monday", and "X-Cops" come to mind), but it started to be an excellent example of the Law of Diminishing Returns. I tuned in for the finale and remember feeling pretty disgusted that after 9 seasons they couldn't just bring the story to a close. I'm more fine with it now, and I actually kinda liked the second movie for its low-key charms, but still, at a certain point I think enough is enough. I watch the show now and more often than not it seems pretentious, over- and under-baked, and simply ridiculous. Logic, when applied even gently, makes most of it crumble. But I still love it... I love it so. So it's been a long, long wait for today, and I'm sure it's going to be worth it. Hats off to Mark Snow and the LLL team; you've made this fanboy really happy.
