But in general, I love the early 2000s on FSM. Someone started a thread about something – a score, a film – and we would discuss the film or music. Nothing, or very little, about desiring new releases or expansions, or any other technical nuts and bolts. This was pure aesthetics.

Indeed. The time had finally arrived to explore and figure out this whole film music/film/music/score/soundtrack thing. A natural evolution was spawned once the origin of the species was established, resulting in the embarrassment of riches available today. And what a foundation to build upon, especially when you think of what it was like in the decades prior. If you were around for all or some of them, that is. wink

An excellent contribution that fits in nicely with the tenor of this thread. Cheers, Thor.

Thank you, Howard. I hope to see you around the "Cheers"meetings at some point. I'm afraid I'm finished with the other one.

So there I was the other day at the DMV renewing registrations for a couple company vehicles when I faux-innocently inquired of the service representative,

"Doctor, while you're here could I possibly renew my driver's license that expires in a few months?"
"Sure. Looks like all you need is a vision test."

Aced the test. Driving glasses not even needed (much to my delight); put 'em right back in the case in a moment of triumph.

"Next, go over there to have your picture taken."

Now it's not like I have a face that melts lenses. Above-Average looking guy. If you consider average the Wolf Man. But I hadn't combed my hair--thankfully at my age it's still a full coif, and (even more to my delight) still dark too cool--but I figured 's no sweat, even for a bloke like me who's very Shadow Of A Doubtish when it comes to having his picture taken.

Click! zip-zip and $54 later eek I'm handed my new driver's license, good for another 8 years.
It looked like a mugshot.
I compared the smiling, well-kempt lad in the one from 8 years ago to the current.
It was no comparison. It was death to Moby Dick.

I know what you must be saying to yourselves,
If that's the way he feels about it why doesn't he just end it all?
Oh, no, not me, I'm not ready for that final disappointment.
Because I know just as well as I'm sitting here typing to you
That when that final moment comes and I'm
Typing my last post, I'll be saying to myself...

... Oh get off it H. Not me! I'm not nearly ready for that final disappointment, Peggy. And what the hey, I ain't ready to get all pissy and moany As Time Goes By either and none of that "Too OLD For The FSM Board" baloney. Gee, folks, who cares what I look like today vs. what I looked like 8 years ago or what I looked like when I posted here for the very first time, 24 years ago this month. Because, and to reiterate...

...ah'm...just...getting...warmed...up. Cheers! razzsmileroll eyes

Ha, ha.....good story, Howard.

I've gained a tremendous amount of weight since 2017, much of it related to mental issues (that I won't go into here). So when I had to get a new passport in 2019, I was already well under way to my current weight. On the picture, I look like a criminal from some Eastern European country.

But yes -- these things also put things into relief. It's amazing to think that when I first logged on to the FSM messageboard, I was this young 20-year-old with all the promises ahead of him. We should find a picture of our own self a the time (1997 for me), and a current one for comparison. Or maybe not.

Not, Thor, not. As Pop Sloan said, "You've been looking behind you, Thor. Try looking ahead." wink

It's mine today/yesterday. I'd been reading and visiting the FSM site for quite a while before I registered, but I don't remember exactly how long that was. But now, it's 21 years registered at the FSM Message Board. That means, if I'd been born the day I registered, I'd now be of drinking age! It doesn't seem that long... embarrassment

Any other recent anniversaries?

Well, today is Norway's national day, and also my paternal grandfather's birthday, who would have turned 100 today (he passed away in 1974, 3 years before I was born). But I'm guessing that's not the kind of anniversary you had in mind. I can't remember exactly when my first post was on FSM, but I THINK it was March-1998. So 25th anniversary next year. Crazy to think about; it feels more like 10 years ago at the most.

This can’t be right....

I don’t remember how to find out the exact date I first joined....but an old post of mine said 2005.

So - 22 years.

Where does time go?

22? Wouldn't that be 17?

Just about the same here... March 1998... sounds about right. Some time in spring 1998, though I cannot exactly say when. Some of us have been longer here at the board than some people who post here have been on Earth. :-)

Jeez - it’s been a long day.

I have just handed in my resignation at the Mathematical Institute for Mathematical Geniuses (Time Elapsed Division)

You could have demanded a recount instead.

We've been discussing it elsewhere and probably earlier in this thread already, but I'm 99% certain that the FSM site first launched the messageboard in December-97 (a check on archive.org seems to confirm this). I'd obviously been reading it since its inception (and, in fact, been a subscriber to the magazine since '95), but I just lurked for the first few months. I'm 100% certain I posted my first post in 1998 -- which is when I was in the military -- but it must have been March. It was, as previously alluded to, a call-out fo anyone who had the OST of Conti's NORTH & SOUTH. Gerry Kroll responded, and the rest is history.

This message board totally preceded the year 2000, but there was a glitch of some kind, and it closed down for a bit. When it came back, all the older posts and stats were gone.

Aye, Ron P. A crying shame. Reminds one of when Hemingway's 1st wife lost all his early manuscripts on the train, never to be seen again. Except by those of us who made hard copies of pre-Y2k posts. wink

It might have been earlier, Thor. Maybe not, but I think I was on it from week one, at least reading, and I thought it took a few months (maybe quite a few) for Latham to show up. I remember his being quite an aberration. He's already present in archive.org's first capture, on Jan 9th, 1998. Maybe there was a summer launch?

That's my memory vs. 24 years, of course.
