What to expect from Monday's suites.
And a note afterwards.

Just two suites next week. A suite from "Blacke's Magic", and the first suite from a score that is, frankly, pretty poison. You'll be itchin' to hear it.
(they'll probably run late and be posted later in the day Monday)

NOTE:
I'll be taking next week off from TV show threads and then coming back to begin the month of love -- February -- with "Fantasy Island" (the original series).

This week's suites.

"Blacke's Magic"
Composer: David Bell
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Jsu93vFEyZA

Suite #1 for David Bell.

Poison Ivy
Composer: David Michael Frank
https://youtube.com/watch?v=xrWqkCNAdnY

For those who don't know, this was a 1992 film starring Drew Berrymore and Sara Gilbert.

Usually when you see the phrase "erotic thriller", it's code word for: it's going to suck balls. Set your standards low and get out while you can. However, this was not the case with this film.

Masterfully directed and even written (with two others) by Katt Shea just as well, on the face it appears to be a film about an older man cheating on his wife with a younger woman, but the deeper commentary on life, the subtext, the weaving of life lessons while evoking all of those, if masterfully done.

There's so much to comment on, but off the top of my head: t he ignorance of youth, wanting what isn't yours, getting but not earning and the consequences of that, the consequences of your actions, the next generation cleaning up and making what is old new again, and lies and the tangled web they weave.

Then on top of all that is a also a good dose of foreshadowing. with forks in the road where it could go another way if the character just made the right choices.

Looking over Katt Shea's credits, she's barely done anything since -- which is a shame: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002240/?ref_=tt_ov_dr

The score -- a last-game replacement score with only two weeks to write and record -- was done by David Michael Frank. Featuring orchestra, synths, and easily identifiable theme, there is a good amount of repetition, but it's enjoyable nonetheless and the score fits the movie like a glove.

There has been no official release of score for some reason. There has been some odds and ends where and there. A super super obscure cast & crew score promo with only ten copies, an mp3 of a cue that used to be on D.M.F.'s official website, a some what obscure studio promo with tracks from various films with one cue from it. I wish some label would rectify this after thirty years.

Any chance of some Arthur B. Rubinstein suites?

I’ve not scrolled thru 25 pages so apologies if I’ve missed something Andy, but the music for the excellent Spenser: For Hire was routinely excellent.

This week's suite.
Sorry, just one this week. Next week should have three, including the next "Most Wanted" suite.

Poison Ivy
https://youtube.com/watch?v=eKwwcnVXeJE

Suite #2 (of three).

This week's suite.
Apologies in advance -- the "Most Wanted" suite turned out to need more work than I anticipated; expect it next week. And the other suite I ran out of time to have ready.

Poison Ivy
https://youtube.com/watch?v=pUOINe4F79o

Suite #3 -- the final suite. All three suites cover most of the film's score.

This week's suites.
I actually had four suites ready to go, but I wasn't sure I'd have anything for next week, so I am holding them back. So, next week's suites: the second "Blacke's Magic" suite (David Bell) and a suite for the failed pilot "Enigma" (Harry Sukman). Maybe another short suite.

"Masquerade"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=B77yL40gOeM

Suite #1 for Stu Phillips. I did two suites. This suite covers the pilot and I think part of the next episode.

"Most Wanted"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=5yoSX32Pzlc

Suite covering the only episode Duane Tatro scored. When I originally recorded this suite, the SFX was so bad it was less than six minutes long. I liked the score so much I decided to do what I did for Rosenthal's suite -- I went through all the episodes, found all the tracked score, and used cleaner/clean parts over the bad parts and as a result I was about to over double the length of the score.

The score was chopped up some and even tracked in the same episode the original score was in -- "The Corrupter". I had to make a couple of editorial decisions and one creative editing decision. I could be mistaken, but I swear I heard score from Tatro that was not used in the episode, but still tracked into other episodes. Doesn't seem to be as badly mangled as Rosenthal's score, but still -- an official release would be super helpful.

This is another score they liked tracking into episodes.

Still working on the last two suites. The Drasnin suite looks like it will take two suites alone.

Wonderful suites yet again many thanks

"Blacke's Magic"
Composer: Joel McNeely
https://youtu.be/i7jWgiozXTQ

So the first connection to Jerry Goldsmith is that McNeely did additional scoring on "Air Force One".

Joel only scored two episodes and this suite covers both very fine scores. And in this suite Yavar and more knowledgeable score fans will find half a theme Jerry has used in at least three scores (off the top of my head). Of them, this seems to be a lift from the version heard in Goldsmith rejected score to "Gladiator" (the 192 boxing film).

And that is how you do a Jerry Goldsmith suite without using any Jerry Goldsmith score. :-)

I completed the scoring credits a month ago using loads on youtube, so I doubt Yavar even knew about this, coupled with the forgotten and obscure nature of the show. I wanted to cover the series, but the channel was copyrighted out of existence. I did, however, make three suites covering all the episodes David Bell scored, so that's at least salvaged in coming eventually.

Well, I enjoyed your suite quite a bit Justin (thanks!) but I must admit that apart from the opening cue sounding a bit inspired by Jerry's Jewish style, I'm not hearing the similarity. Can you give exact timestamps between your suite and Gladiator or the other three Goldsmith scores you hear a connection with?

This week's suites.
A note about next week's suites at the end.
I'll get back to you, Yavar.

"Blacke's Magic"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=mo0FHuPedHE

Suite #3 -- the final suite for David Bell. All three suites cover all the episodes he scored.

"Enigma"
Composer: Harry Sukman
https://youtube.com/watch?v=aVTfIfQWi9M

Score from a failed pilot.

NEXT WEEK'S SUITES:
The second and final suite I made for "Masquerade" (Stu Who). And I hope to have one or two more suites.

"Most Wanted" update. At the latest I hope to have to the next suite up in three weeks. It'll be Robert Drasnin and it's so long that I'll have to divide it into two suites.

Oops -- sorry. Looking back now I realize I never posted suite #2 for David Bell. Well, expect that next week. Got ahead of myself.

This week's suites.
And a note about next week's suites.

"Blacke's Magic"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=-shHhs_VYWg

Here is suite #2 which I accidentally skipped over last week. NOW I am finished with David Bells' work on the series.

"Masquerade"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=sOEGMknQZt4

Suite #2 -- the final suite I recorded -- for Stu Phillips.

Drag Racer
Composer: William Loose
https://youtube.com/watch?v=GelZr8vba5Q

Unreleased funky score, with some peaceful piece with two guitars and a piano. Aside from editing out FX, this is the entire score from the forgotten race car movie.

NEXT WEEK'S SUITES
The first suite by Drasnin for "Most Wanted", and a suite from "Hunter" (Richard Markowitz). Probably nothing else, but you never know what will be done and ready by next week.

This week's suites.
Notes about forthcoming suites after wards.

"Hunter"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=sVBz5QTx31g

Suite #1 for Richard Markowitz. As there are no further episodes up that he scored, this is the only suite for him. As the end credits were cut off, I was not able to get a screen grab of his credit, so I had to make a fake one. Aside from the letter "z" on the end, I think I did a fairly good job.

"Most Wanted"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=9QprX9VIuLw

Suite #1 for Robert Drasnin. The score was so long I had to break it into two suites.

Like all the other composers for the show, he only scored one episode. Even though they liked to track his scoring a good deal, some cues received no tracking and others only had parts tracked. I tried my best to find it all and clean up cues as possible. Some dialogue and FX is kept to maintain the composition's writing.

Thankfully, one repeating and slightly increasing build in orchestra statement for the "Apache" that was buried in unsalvageable FX in the episode ("The Ritual Killer") was found SFX free in another episode.

NOTES:
As I am running out of suites (due to flash drive space availability), I am going to be putting out one, maybe two, suites a week from here on in, that way I can also free up time to do the mystery kids series I eluded to earlier in the thread (it's taken more time than I thought).

I'll also be adding a new feature: RETRO SUITES
Wherein I will sometimes link to old suites I did years ago back when I could pay for my own flash drives -- stuff you may not even know I did.

This week's suites.
And a note about the suites for the next month, afterwards.

"Most Wanted"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=5g_wr--2DU4

Final suite for Drasnin.

This suite features and interesting cue that is totally out of place with the rest of the score -- a car chase piece that is essentially "The Mod Squad" theme, but as a backing, with Schifrin's theme playing over it. Now the music that proceeds it -- I found that in another episodes and it properly fades out, indicating to me this Mod Squad theme cue was a replacement for music that was either not used or perhaps the scene was even not scored. I'm not even sure it's by Drasnin.

I hope you enjoyed the score as much as I did. It wasn't until I spent a shit-load of time listening to it, that I realized all the clever things he did and the way he weaved ideas in and out. It's really a brilliant little score.

RETRO SUITE:

As promised last week, this feature has me bringing attention to older suites you may not even know I did. So, without further delay...

"Future Cop"
https://youtube.com/watch?v=VVp92O_36jg

A short-lived cop series. Composer for the series were Billy Goldenberg, J.J. Johnson, and Thomas Talbot. The composers are featured in that order in the suite; the last forty-five second or so cue is Talbot (a cool action piece).

At the time I didn't know there was one or two TV movies after the show was cancelled, and therefore I did not cover. The suite just covers all episodes of the show.

NOTES:
I am running out of suites. It's just going to be one suite a week from hereon in (not counting RETRO SUITES). But even at that pace, I probably only got six more weeks of suites.

I have "Most Wanted" burn out, so I am putting the final suite (Markowtiz) aside and I am concentrating largely on the mystery TV series -- I really want that closer to completion.

This week's suite.

"The Wonderful World of Little Julius"
Composer: Eddy Manson
https://youtube.com/watch?v=J9XsMPGPNxI

A pilot was filmed for potential series. The network didn't like the first pilot and a second was filmed with some changes, but the same composer was kept and he did a new score. This suite covers both scores, with a screen grab of each pilot credit. No further episodes were made.

RETRO SUITE:

"The Andy Griffith Show"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuAfMAYu3VI

Suite of score covering various episodes, that I put together back in 2013.

 By:   Yavar Moradi   (Member)

The Andy Griffith Show had such great music across the series. As far as I know, just like Earle Hagen's work on I Spy, this was a case where there was little to no tracking, and every episode received an original orchestral score by him. It's fantastic work, with recurring themes and motifs for various characters and situations (Barney Fife of course, the Darlings, etc. etc.)

It's a crying shame there has never been a *real* soundtrack release from the show.

What to expect from Monday's suite: one suite from an episode of a TV series, and some RETRO SUITES from another TV series I haven't done a thread for yet.

Updates in the final suites:

Some of the names you will see in the final suites are Richard Markowiwz (obviously the final "Most Wanted" episode score), John Parker, and Patrick Williams.

The mystery kids series I alluded to, is very much loser now to completion. I think it's entirely realistic that you'll see the first suite in two weeks, three weeks at the latest.

As I said earlier in he thread -- I neither expect anybody to remember or go looking -- I'm going to go back to the "City of Angels" and "The Rookies" suites and delete material I don't need to keep; it won't be lost, as the full suites will still be in the reduced sound quality videos I rendered and am holding on to so I don't have t make them again or save screen grabs. This will probably mean another suite or two can be done. I already have one picked and just waiting.

This week's suite.

"Get Christie Love!"
Composer: Frank DeVol[
https://youtube.com/watch?v=rbELzl6Fi1A

This is a suite from what is presumably his only effort for the show.

RETRO SUITES:

You lucky nerd, you -- you get five today.

"Hunter"

Composers: Mike Post & Pete Carpenter
Suite #1: https://youtube.com/watch?v=UYqgMupGm74
Suite #2: https://youtube.com/watch?v=aHO4lUxbvFw
Suite #3: https://youtube.com/watch?v=x-0QQQpMEjg

Composer: Walter Murphy
Suite #1: https://youtube.com/watch?v=lBgKU4r0bek
Suite #2: https://youtube.com/watch?v=V6nSdpjKqxQ

Suites covering most of the 1980's cop show. It's one of those shows I simply haven't gotten to yet. As I recall, the three suites for Post/Carpenter, cover all the first six seasons. The seventh season was scored by Murphy, and his suites covers most half of it (At the time not all the episodes were available, so I did what I could).

Sorry, no suites this week.

Unless I have another set back, I hope to have the first suite to the mystery kids TV series I alluded to months ago and gave this sample for:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w62nR-yTzIM

Very tentatively I want to say three to five suites, with tentatively ten minutes or so per suite.

It's probably not going to happen, but I hope to have another suite for a different project, up the same day.

NOTES: When I am done with "Medical Center", I am going to take a week or two off, then in April come fly away with a TV series, then sometime in May I will be back for what I call the "Summer months" of May, June, and July, for two or three western TV series.
