It's not Ed Wood Jr daft, it's just so slow, silly, badly acted (especially by Michael Caine) and misjudged throughout.

I gather that the film is starting to get really popular with "bad movie" aficionados. Like Ed Wood's stuff, it's an unintentional comedy, and some people are enjoying it from that perspective. But I don't think the score, which revs up the bombast and melodrama at every opportunity, was trying to play to the camp intentionally. I think Goldsmith was just responding to the tone he was seeing. He nailed the personality of Irwin Allen.

Goldsmith said the film HAD EVERYTHING...I quote...

"Whew!...This is a hell of a film. It has everything - love, pathos, crises, high drama and awesome scenes!"

That was from the original LP liner notes! I kinda doubt it's an actual quote. But who knows, Goldsmith supposedly really liked Supergirl!

Doesn't have to be David Lean to be enjoyed.

Nor is it polite to trash something for which you’ve been paid good money.

... scanning quickly through this old thread, I don't see mention anywhere of the inside sleeve artwork. Was this a Jack Davis cartoon? Originally done for MAD? I have no idea, but it really stood out.

Quoting myself here. Well, nobody else does. Anyone know about the origins of the (what looks like) Jack Davis artwork? It was kind of "funny" to see it used in the LLL release.

I dragged out my copy of the CD and can't recognize the artist. According to the fine print in the liner notes the artwork is all copyright Warner Bros., which would suggest it's from MAD, but it's not Jack Davis or Mort Drucker or Angelo Torres, or any of the obvious gang of idiots / usual suspects of which I am familiar. Perhaps it's from one of the other parody magazines from that time (Cracked / Sick / Crazy)?

Does anyone know if Mike Matessino monitors this site? Perhaps he might know.

Cheers,
BobE!

And who knows what Goldsmith meant by "this is a hell of a film". :-D

The original LP liner notes were obviously Irwin Allen worshipping PR.

I don't know how much time he spends here, but he has regularly posted on this board in the past. (Which of course doesn't mean he reads every single thread... who does? I sure don't. :-) )

I've asked Irwin Allen biographer Jeff Bond for the details on this illustration. He was with me at WB when we selected the images for this album.

The artist for The Swarm illustration is Bob Bentovoja. Look him up and you'll find illustrations for other Irwin Allen television shows and features.

Thanks very much for that info, Neil. I did look up some of the work of Bob "Boss" Bentovoja, and yes, he did some similar posters for THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE and THE TOWERING INFERNO. They're very fun posters indeed - I'm just wondering what the initial purpose of them was. I suppose I could dig deeper, but it doesn't really matter. I can see THE SWARM as perfect for lampooning, but not so much the earlier "good" films. And especially in the case of THE SWARM, it's not a film you'd like to promote with such a piss-taking illustration. And maybe that's why I found it odd to see it as the inlay artwork for the LLL CD set. Hilarious but odd. Still, more than forty years on I think that we've all come to accept the film as a comedy.

Whatever, I see that Bob Bentovoja apparently did a lot of freelance work for film studios. I also happened to notice that he passed away at the age of 90 in November 2019. I imagine that the CDs were in production around that very time.

I listened to the set again last night, following Jeff Bond's liner notes and "re-imagining" the recently-watched film. It's great music and I'm beginning to feel a strange affection for the film itself. In all honesty I think that Henry Fonda's performance is outstanding. At the other end of the scale is Michael Caine. I just noticed the other day... is that green eyeshadow he's wearing?

You know I've been banging on about this release ever since I got it two weeks ago, how great it is and all that ... Well, here's a funny thing - I went back to the Prometheus release for the first time in ages, and I FAR prefer the sound on that one to the sound on the "new (2020) La-La Land. I kind of skipped over the MQA info, but compared to the Prometheus the LLL now sounds to me overly reverbed. The sound's kind of warm, but I really prefer the stark, dry sound of the earlier release.

On the Prometheus I can hear every little orchestral detail. It's brittle, which I like, especially when the snare drums are rat-tat-tatting away in my right headphone and all these weird little details are surprising me from the left. In the LLL it's all kind of lost in a mush.

Anyway, my equipment isn't the best, but it's what I have, and I was really startled by how good (better) the old Prometheus sounds.

I can't do a side-by-side comparison (I sold the Promethus disc as soon as the LLL came out) but I feel the same way about the latest edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The 3-discer sounds clearer than the 2-discer to my ears

One rule of thumb is never to let Bruce Botnick near this stuff...

I guess it bears repeating but the mix on the Prometheus album is incorrect for the entire album. This was a 3-track Left-Center-Right mix and the Prometheus swapped the center and right channels. That's why you're hearing the percussion on the right.

One rule of thumb is never to let Bruce Botnick near this stuff...

Bruce and I both felt the original recording was far too day and we used period accurate plate reverb for this release. All decisions were made together, so any issues you have with the release I'll take as much blame, no matter how much I disagree with you.

Whoa, never thought anyone would prefer the Prometheus over LLLs SWARM. La La Land's mix sounds terrific, everything sounds "right", the Prometheus just sounds "off" in direct comparison.

Happy Birthday Jerry Goldsmith!

Here's something about the cover of the LLL release.
