I enjoyed putting together a collection of my favorites from the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies awhile back. Here's my first attempt at a highlights compilation:
I'm the same. The 3 scores (6 DISCS!!) are waiting for me to give them a proper 'sit-down/play/select my fave tracks' listen, but I haven't got around to it yet. The 'boredom memories' of the films hasn't helped.
Or 12 if you consider the expanded versions... but try not to consider those. I only got through the first 2 films, sure the other will get watched, eventually.
I like reading these interpretations on how to ‘convert’ a C&C score to A&A or, at least, create a favourite program. Film music seems to be the one musical world where—thanks to our beloved labels—we often get opportunity to go beyond what was on records issued contemporaneously with a film.

It is absolutely unique in that regard! I guess the closest comparison is when you create your own "greatest hits" compilation of your favorite pop band's songs.
Next up on my list is Quincy Jones's score for BANNING, just recently released by LLL. As before, this is my version of what could have been the LP edition when the movie came out in '68, working with the 30-45 minute restriction and sides A/B and mixing up the main theme variations, suspense and groove tracks. For example, the tracks "The Tounament", "Trying Tie" and "Sudden Death" all are variations on the suspense motif and I spread them out among the album running time. Below is my custom album edit
BANNING Custom Album Edit Total Time 43:53
LP Side A: 1.The Eyes Of Love (Vocal: Gil Bernal) 2.Main Title 3.The Tournament 4.The Eyes Of Love (Instrumental) 5.Poker/Take Tea And Me 6.Sudden Death
LP Side B: 1.Main Title (Alternate) 2.The Set-Up 3.Banning Can't Forget 4.Trying Tie 5.Relay Chase 6.Finale
Here is my 'News Of The World' (JNH) whittled edition.
1. Capt Jefferson 2. There Is No Time For Stories 3. Leaving Wichita 4. Arriving At Red River 7. The Road To Dallas 8. It's Hard Finding Your Way Home 10. What Else Can You Teach Me? 13. Johanna Returns Home 15. A Gift 16. Castroville 17. Kidd Visits Maria 18. Miss Johanna Kidd 19. End Titles
It runs around 40 minutes and eliminates most of the moody/drony atmospheric stuff and the 10 minute chase/shoot out sequence Dime Mountain (but worry not, it's not like the chase action stuff from WYATT EARP, even if it does work fine for the film sequence, modern scoring style).
1) Arrivals 2) Cash 3) The Bomb 4) The Set Up 5) The Morning After 6) Dust 7) The Funeral 8) A Nice Fellow 9) The Plan (from disc 2) 10) Out Of Business 11) The Plan (revised) electronic rescore 12) The Bank (revised) electronic rescore 13) The Bank Continued (revised) electronic rescore 14) Identities 15) To Mexico 16) No Friendlies 17) A Good Chance 18) They Don't Care 19) You Ready? 20) A Deal
Here's my first whittle attempt for Jungle Cruise-
Nothing Else Matters (Jungle Cruise Version Part 1) Stop Her! A Steamer to Brazil Jungle Cruise Nilo Preparing to Set Sail Sub Attack Encantado The Rapids Lily Snoops Trader Sam The Tree Fight Joachim and the Bees I Built a Boat La Luna Rota Underwater Puzzle Petal Negotiations Conquistadors Arrive I Want You to Rest Now Jungle Cruise Suite
This is probably the easiest whittle I've done in awhile. Just deleted cues I didn't like or disrupted the flow of the program and swapped out one cue for the alt cue. Done!

Total Time: 1hr (approx)
Notes: Not sure if I'm gonna keep the last cue as the sound quality appears below the rest of the program.
Has anyone had a go at either Cold Mountain (Yared) or Come Away (Debney)? Somewhat random choices but two scores I listened to recently and enjoyed parts of but the albums are just too long so drag quite badly at times...
I might attempt a COME AWAY whittle at some point, Tom.
In the meantime, I did a Midnight Whittle.
THE MIDNIGHT SKY (Alexandre Desplat)
1. The Midnight Sky 2. Aether Spaceship 4. Iris In The Stars 5. Evacuation 6. Families & Friends 7. In The Milky Way 8. A Child 14. Survivors 16. Changing Route 19. Mourning 21. A Ride Home 22. A New Life Ahead
Runs about 38 minutes and drops most of the suspense and action tracks, keeping the more tender/emotional cues.
