I'll be appearing in a national radio program with Alexandre Desplat on Friday!!

[irony] Ask him we he didn't refuse to score a movie that was destined to be done by Williams! [/irony]

Honestly, congratulations! So, will this interview be in French, Norwegian, or English? And any chance to find an mp3 of it afterwards?

I really enjoy this score.

I do wish there had been a few more references to Williams' themes, but then I wish Williams had scored the whole series (if any recent series has cried out for Wagnerian leitmotif, it's this one). In particular, the Potter family theme from PoA would have been nice to hear during the Godric's Hollow scene. Also, Williams' Voldemort theme and Hedwig's Theme are melodically related, so it would have been great to hear them intertwined in new ways, because of where the story has gone.

But there really are a number of standout tracks on here. "Sky Battle," "Ron Leaves," "Rescuing Hermione," "Farewell to Dobby" (though I really wish they'd quit giving away key plot twists in the track titles).

I assume it will be in Norwegian, but English for the Desplat segment. So of limited interest to most here, I guess. I haven't yet had it confirmed if he's live via telephone or if the interview is conducted beforehand. Yes, there will be an online sound file of it.

Fantastic! Maybe you can squeeze in a question how the next Potter score will "differ" from the current one (which I love by the way).

Cool! I think this is awesome about Scandinavia, you could never insert an all-English interview into a German radio programme.

If it's possible, ask Desplat if he's planning on using more Williams themes in the next installment. Thanks! smile

I'll be appearing in a national radio program with Alexandre Desplat on Friday!!

It's half-hour special on the music for HARRY POTTER films with myself, the host and the French composer (via telephone).

Should be cool!

Just don't bother him about expanded releases of his scores and why you wouldn't like them. wink

Sorry, just kidding. Congrats on this opportunity.

Can you ask him if he still uses MOTU Digital Performer for his composing? I noticed Pro Tools 8 running in the background during those interviews he gave for HP7. Tell him if he's switched I won't buy his scores any more! wink

More kidding...

A bit more seriously: As the topic of album arrangements and listening experiences is quite close to your heart, will you ask him about how he sets out to make albums from his scores, and what is important in this creative re-working in his view?

Amazing. Ask him if he's going to use the Lovegoods's theme for the Luna Lovegood scenes in Part 2.

Thor, by the way: Have you read the PhD thesis by Jamie Lynn Webster, "THE MUSIC OF HARRY POTTER: CONTINUITY AND CHANGE IN THE FIRST FIVE FILMS"? So far, I had only time for the final conclusions - don't know where to steal the time right now to read 820 pages, but it surely sounded interesting.

In watching the video about the score, Mr Desplat looks like Anton Ego...

If there's room & time for it, I will.

Can't say that I have, no. Sounds interesting, though.

Yikes, incredible scope of that one, even for a doctorate.

And that she got a scholarship for it too! In this backward-striving country, I would never have gotten a scholarship for such a project.

I don't mean to diminish the importance of film music, but it does feel like the culture that will pay someone to write that analysis must be enjoying an apogee of wealth that makes indulgences like that seem small.

franz_conrad, I can understand in a way what you mean. But in the end, such a dissertation is just a way of proving that you know how to work scientifically in that particular field. The topic itself is really not that important. We used to say that the only real point of a PhD is to prove that you can stubbornly work on a single topic for several years, which very well might be of interest only to your supervisors, without giving up or going mental.
If there's some insight to be gleaned from the finished product that is of interest beyond the author's direct peers, this is added value, and in this respect, I would call this thesis a success. And if a society is wealthy enough to support an individual in getting her degree by writing such a work, this should be seen as a good sign. There are worse ways to spend money than on training people.

My article is up, which is a precursor to the radio show.

Thanks for the link, Thor! Thankfully, Google Translate by now is good enough to give me a fairly sensible translation of it. I think I would personally rank the scores a bit differently, but this is a matter of taste. Where I have to strongly disagree though, and won't back off a single inch, is this: SPIDERS ARE NO INSECTS! smile
