Mr. Matessino was apparently taxed enough by this remaster that he expressed lingering exasperation when I complemented his effort and, truly, such were his source material challenges that he couldn't make every cue sound top-notch.

However, enough of the finest cues sound great that the project should be considered a ringing success.

My favorite cue, "Brody Panics" sounds sterling and I couldn't be happier.

As to availability, surely it will never be long out of print.

If audio technology for restoration improvements changes, I’d be wiling and happy to buy Jaws again.

It's the 50th anniversary this year, I'm almost certain someone will do something Jaws related...

Seems to be the case, yes

In collaboration with Back Lot Music and Universal Pictures, Mondo will release a definitive and newly remastered presentation of the legendary score by John Williams on 2xLP vinyl.

In an era where everything gets celebrated every five years, it makes all the more sense that one of the greatest films of all time and its seminal score get a massive celebration on such a big round anniversary.

I would love to know more about Intrada's licensing agreements for this title. I was just listening this morning to the episode of The Goldsmith Odyssey with wonderful Doug and Chris Malone (also wonderful!) talking about Inchon.

In it, Doug talked about how Jaws had sold out, and they had needed to come to an agreement to release it again in an altered form... just like BTTF, as a single disc release. But that never happened, and instead it re-appeared as the 2 disc version. I wonder if the single disc release is still yet to come.

Maybe it will go the route of Robocop similar to what happened with the Milan release - and someone else just using the Intrada version on a different label. Time will tell.

Do you suppose that in the 10 years since this came out, the technology and processes for score restorations has changed enough that it could be improved upon?

The new 4K videodisc coming this summer has a new Dolby Atmos sound mix.

I'd wouldn't be surprised if the music sources have already been sonically upgraded somehow in preparation.

And yes, de-noising and dynamic range extension on older recordings is much better now than ten years ago. Listen to this:

On The John Williams Fan Site …Mike Matessino is in a Q&A about Jaws and Jaws 2…and talks about Deccca’s Version and how Mike’s processes Jaws vs Jaws 2. Very fascinating interview..and might help clear up any lingering questions. Jaws and Jaws 2 is further down in the interview. It is a very informative and great read!

Thanks for reposting this. It was nice to read again. Mike talks about the Jaws LP release and how there were no tape elements to be found. I suspected at the time, and still do, that they were lost in the 2008 Universal vault fire. I suspect the same happened to the ET album master as IIRC it wasn't sourced for that expansion either. Of course no one has really confirmed this.

On the one hand we are told repeatedly (here) that no scoring masters were lost, on the other hand we're told there is no full accounting, then a third hand that belongs to composer Tim Truman comes in and says the tapes for his "Miami Vice" scoring were lost in the fire. Who do we believe? The answer probably belongs in a middle ground that the studio doesn't want to admit to for legal reasons and blow back.

That's inaccurate. The Atmos mix isn't new. It's the same disc that's been out for years.

Just in case anyone else is confused: this is a decade old. The tense made me think it was new.

Correction…Mike has repeatedly and reported over and over again..There was No Soundtracks that were apart of the Universal Fires..I remember seeing it here and on the Legacy of John Williams Podcast! No! Soundtracks were destroyed by the Universal Fires!

I thought it was "no film masters were destroyed in the Universal fire" -- do I have that wrong?

Of course some soundtrack albums were new recordings produced specifically for that album, and so distinct from "film masters".

I just want to showcase those two edits i made from the INTRADA RELEASE

I have done it before but they don't get the credit they deserved IMO

The first track MAIN TITLE and SEA ATTACK NUMBER ONE is a crossmix of main title and man against beast

the inspiration was from how JW combine his star wars main title with other cues from the film - The album main title arrangement was inspiration for where the edit was going to be

i think MAN AGAINST BEAST flow much better this way - the film cue does never reach the same energi from the album version becuase of a slow start which is why i believe JW cut that off in the album - by omitting the slow start the action is full front here and the energy reach that of the album

the next track showcased i have title THE SHARK

this is not the theme

the pieces consist of three cues - typewriter chord, remains of the beach and father son

the title more reflects how the shark fills into brody's mind and how it really shows how he is incapaable of take action and listen too much too other instead of doing what is the right

this is really edit i like - it flows really good
