Sorry, I don't hear it AT ALL. This is straight up 80s orchestral adventure pastiche (seen through the prism of his latter-day stylings), which he's never really done before.
I agree. When this thread talked about the out of stock status of this cd I added it to my Amazon cart because I didn’t want to be left out. But I listened to it and I don’t find it that interesting. I like the sketches more. I bought Hillbilly Elegy and I find that a nice listen. I wish I could get into the superhero movies too. Tried to watch recent Avengers chapters and can’t get past the first 30 minutes. Did like Guardians, thought that was fun. In the DC Universe the characters just seem to do a lot of posing for the camera.
People seem to conflate the fact that it's (largely) a "melodic" score with some kind of 90s throwback, because he also happened to do a lot of melodic things back then. I just find it ridiculous. Practically all of his scores that had a strong orchestral presence in the 90s adhered to his various variations of power anthems, or with a strong electronic undercurrent. Or the orchestra was used more as colourization, or the chord progressions moved in a pop melody-kind of way. Even something like the largely orchestral HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS was deeply embedded in this. SPIRIT, THE PRINCE OF EGYPT, RADIO FLYER etc were NOTHING like the Grusin/Williams/Horner-kind of approximation he's doing here.
As you can tell, the "90s link" that people make in regards to WW84 really, really irritates me. Enjoy it for what it is, but please don't make it out to be something it's not.
So now you're telling me I DIDN'T hear SPIRIT, EGYPT et al when I first heard WW84 a few months back. Really!!?? Do you know how 'Mind Control Crazy' you are starting to act, Thor?
I agree Thor, by the way WW84 is not a so great orcherstral score to my ears , the orchestration is simplistic and the thematic variations quite poor, I expected a little more after listening to the main title but the rest is very percussive and quite redundant.

You can hear whatever you want. I just don't agree with it.
I can also hear bits of Spirit or Pearl Harbor in WW84 but not Horner or Williams. Probably a bit of Morricone in the love theme. But I also agree with Thor in that the overall style of the melodies in this score are not very similar to the ones Zimmer wrote in the 90s or 2000s.
But what counts the most is that I enjoy the score very-very much!
It didn't sound much like 90s 'power anthem' Zimmer to me either. Mostly it it sounds like a more melodic version of the type of music he's been doing for 15 years.
Not really, I think it has more to do with preference. I just prefer the serious, visionary Zimmer these days. I'd rather have things like DUNKIRK than WW84. But by all means, enjoyable soundtrack for what it is (at least the first half, the second half is more generic, contemporary Zimmer action music).
I think and hope the upcoming DUNE will be more "my" type of Zimmer.

I know your tastes are different. I only take exception when you say "serious" music, like WW84 isn't serious writing. Of course it is.
I think it TOTALLY calls back to some of his 90s work, Thor. After hearing bits of this score within the film (and on Spotify) I was digging out SPIRIT & RADIO FLYER & PRINCE OF EGYPT and also PEARL HARBOUR, as it reminded me of sections from those scores. And it still does. .

Dunkirk doesn't make sense for WW84 though. That is what makes a great composer right? You can adapt to different movie genres and styles. WW84 is perfect for that type of film.
With Dune...I think it will be a cross between Gladiator and Blade Runner 2049. Which one would satisfy you more?
