Back in the sixties, Hugo Montenegro had a hit with a safe light music version of The Good The Bad & The Ugly, which I hated, & I think it got further up the charts than the fantastic Morricone original. So I think of Montenegro in terms of easy listening light music, no interest for me, that & the fact I've never seen (or have any interest in seeing) Hurry Sundown means an easy pass, but great news for the people who are stoked about this release.
Rameau, Don't be too quick to judge Hugo Montenegro by his record albums and versions of other film themes. His original film scores for Hurry Sundown and The Undefeated, in particular, fall into the category of serious film scoring, not the "easy listening light music" you refer to having become acquainted with. Maybe it's down to working with decent orchestrators on the original stuff; I couldn't really say but would suggest that you check out the samples to find (hopefully!) something more to your taste.

I agree with James; Hurry Sundown and The Undefeated are two excellent examples of Americana.

I like some of the themes in the samples but I'm having a hard time deciding if this is going to be for me. Some parts of it give me a feel like the music from Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines but I'm not so sure about how much jazz will be prominent. Not so big on that style.
Listen to the cues that are in the link provided by Leo Nicols above. If you're still on the fence after that, forget it. There's nothing there for you.

One more score that is never brought up (because it is a comedy), but was another item that made me forgive his Morricone and UNCLE cover versions, was VIVA MAX !

I like Viva Max the film and score very much. I used to have the LP but traded it for something I guess, now I don't even have it on CDR, sic, will it ever get a release on CD I wonder? I also very much like Montenegro's music for the Elvis Presley Western Charro, I'd love to see a release of that score too! In the meantime I'm very much looking forward to Hurry Sundown arriving next week! Viva Intrada!

Oh thank you Intrada. Have been waiting for CD version for many years and at last, and extended! Can't wait to hear this fabulous music in stunning quality. Drove me mental trying to find a copy after my turntable became obsolete...then of course accidentally came across it on itunes .Having collected soundtracks since the 60's and having an Lp version of this great music...At LAST a long wait is over. After 50+ years of collecting soundtracks the one soundtrack I so desperately wanted is on CD. Now, the last soundtrack(extended) is The Great Race that is on my wish list. The 60's film music is something that is hard to forget. INTRADA RULES.

What a great score! I, or somebody else will certainly write a more detailed analysis, but for for now I will simply say, imagine that somebody gene-spliced Elmer Bernstein and Lalo Schifrin.
