I mean, it's not the worst choice they could've made, but still disappointing.

Agreed.

So how on earth did the director of GALAXY QUEST *not* hire his sometime collaborator David Newman to complete the Bill & Ted trilogy?

I mean, I'm a fan of Isham too but this just makes no sense.

That IS a weird one...maybe West Side Story is taking up all his time?

Both films open five months apart from each other, and the earliest is this one -- August of next year. Got to be plenty of time there.

Disappointing, but considering Newman's history with both Parisot and the franchise, I can't imagine they wouldn't have considered him. Maybe West Side Story really would prevent him from being able to squeeze it in (that's not exactly a simple scoring assignment).

Anyway, if we can't have Newman, Isham is not a bad choice.

William, if you please...

I'm actually more upset than if someone like Balfe had been hired (though Isham is a good composer, in my book, he's no Newman). The production team wanted a strong score and so they hired a talented veteran composer, only it's the wrong damn one. This kind of incompetence doesn't happen accidentally. I am gobsmacked and a little impressed.

As Cool World proved, Isham can do zany.

... but now I hate Spielberg. wink

Cool World was the first title, popped in me craw...BUT.

That was 27 years ago. I love Isham, and he hasn't written anything in that neighborhood since....92 I guess? And he seems to have moved away from this sort if gig - does Dolphin Tale count? Not really I guess....

Me thinks they're paying for the name. If he makes it to the finish line I'll be dining on Crow Salad with Basil. Yum.

Not and never too late to Balfe....

.

Would it be possible that Isham got this gig due to demo auditions? Without Newman, I have to believe in something. ANYTHING but Balfe Control.

PS: Now I'm having visions of Bear McCreary at the helm... cool

I assume (like a few members above) that David Newman can't do this because of "West Side Story," which he's probably been working on all year. This was the situation with Danny Elfman having to decline "Pee-Wee's Big Holiday" - there just wasn't any room in his schedule for it that year, and Elfman reportedly felt bad about not being able to do it. But if you're booked, you're booked.

I think Mark Isham is an inspired choice, and certainly a better composer IMO than 90% of those who are consistently hired to score American movies/tv these days. My favorite scores of his - "Cool World" and "Black Dahlia" - are wonderful, so I look forward to hearing his work for this.

But why would Isham demo for....ziss thing??

Is there a filmmaker connection, someone he worked with?

    Strange things are afoot...

Hey, times are tough. One minute, you're scoring blockbusters, and the next, you're on your 20th Lifetime movie. It's a merde! merde! merde! merde! world...

Yeah, like many here, I'm gobsmacked that Newman didn't get the gig and the chance to finish HIS trilogy.
I like Isham. Always have. And there are previous scores in his resume that prove he can tackle and succeed with a score like this* (Cool World, Eight Below, Racing Stripes), but it's still a bit of a bummer.
Oh well, I just hope the whole thing ain't a train wreck. I love the first two fillums.

    *paging Ken Kugler though.

    So frustrating, this news.

Nothing against Mark Isham, but this is tragic.

It's like PEE WEE'S BIG HOLIDAY and CROCODILE DUNDEE IN LOS ANGELES all over again.

It's kinda like, if Laurence Rosenthal was hired to score THE FINAL CONFLICT

....hmmm, actually that might have been pretty darn cool, never mind.

By the way, Youtube (Youube itself, not some illegal upload) has put the sequel film up for free, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey". So if you've forgotten it or have never seen it, now is the time, especially since Death will be back in this upcoming film.
