For anyone intending to attend the Fandango-promoted preview of "Shazam!" on March 23, I would appreciate reading your thoughts on the score. Saw the film yesterday and "loved it" The film is actually much darker than the trailer made out and is certainly NOT for kids, especially below 13. It's a HARD PG-13. Think Deadpool with less cursing and sexual references, and you have this film. It's as violent at times (minus the blood/gore), and certainly more so than the last Avengers. Especially important though.... Shazam! is still MILES BETTER than trash like BvS and remains TONS of fun throughout. As for the score? Really damn good IMO, FAR superior to Captain Marvel. THIS is the REAL Captain Marvel. I say that not just in relation to comic book history but also in the quality of its score. I'm not one to start making comparisons to Williams' Superman when bringing up a modern superhero score and I don't claim to have heard/watched them all, nor know everything about them, BUT.... THIS is the closest I've ever heard a Superhero score get to it, whilst still maintaining its modern sensibilities. I actually really liked Zimmer's Man of Steel, but it's really embarrassing to DC when you have a movie that's closer to the classic comic book Superman, both in tone and it's music than you know? THE REAL THING. Definitely go and see this one guys, and check out the score!

Hmm. Not sure why we need to play the this vs that game, but I think Toprak's score has higher heights than Shazam!'s score does, but I also think that some of the mix is kind of over (or under?) whelming, detracting from the clarity and power of the music. My first impression of Wallfisch's score is that . . . it's fine. It's functional, but generic. The main theme is Generic Superhero Theme #12. It's epic and heroic and functional and, to my ears, instantly forgettable. And the rest of the score is like the majority of Wallfisch scores aside from the beautiful themes: it's there, it does its job, it's compositionally fine, but there's nothing there to make me want to listen to it rather than to a superior, similar score. That said, the Shazam! movie was a blast. It's 2 parts comedy to 1 part superhero/fantasy/horror. The fantasy/horror stuff is generic as hell, super half-assed, and without any personality whatsoever, but the comedy stuff is just a joy. The audience laughed as hard as at any comedy I've ever seen, almost non-stop. The vast majority of the jokes actually land. Zachary Levi brings a level of charm to the role that's completely unexpected and that works better than it has any right to, and the other child actors are all great too. It will be a crime if Momoa's Aquaman and Levi's Shazam never share screen time being charismatic man-children together in a future DC film.

I´d take generic superhero score by Wallfisch over generic RCP score by Toprak any day of the week.

Yeah, BUT unlike many others he had a fairly decent career long before that. Yeah, so did Roque Baños.

Is this score getting a CD release, or is it just more digital-only BS? 100%, expect a digital release. My suspects are for this Friday

All it says in the credits are coming from WaterTower. Yes, that's correct. My suspictions are the score is coming this next Friday (like for example, the new Bishara score is coming a week before the movie release, or like The Meg or Fantastic Beasts)

Yeah, didn't do much for me. Never really felt alive. Bummer. Maybe there'll be an "Into The Hornet's Nest" style cue that will really sell the theme, but not feeling these.

Well that's...loud. Not bad. In fact, I appreciate the traditional-ness of the orchestrations. It's just all cranked up to 11. But I look forward to hearing the rest of the score. The main theme is great, in a Back to the Future-meets-The Adventures of Han kind of way. -
