I am hearing the iTunes release has the same problem as well. Whatever the problem is, it likely goes all the way back to the source master files and not necessarily the lossless album that's being sold. Hope it gets addressed soon.

Bergersen on his FB:

"There will be a high quality lossless version later this year."

https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=2014500391927094&id=147900228587129&comment_id=2014681131909020&comment_tracking=%7B%22tn%22%3A%22R0%22%7D

Hopefully on CD, too. Boggles the mind, however, why he didn't do this right from the beginning. I mean, it's all digital, can't be too hard to supply the FLAC files, either original or corrected, in a timely fashion. Unless 2SfH is using very slow FTPs?

It takes that long to address something like this? I hope this doesn't mean they are about to redo a good chunk of this work from scratch.

The FB answer is from August 1st it seems, I'm not sure he even had in mind the bad quality files we got (when he typed that). Whatever the case might be, it's baffling to send a 128 kbps "master" to every known digital storefront out there.

The main figure that repeats throughout keeps reminding me of Williams' Out to Sea theme....

It's a pity about the sound quality. The writing is very dynamic and would be better suited to a higher bitrate for sure.

One thing I respect is Bergersen's trumpet writing. Unlike so many composers, he doesn't write them in the stratosphere but I do believe I remember reading he actually plays trumpet so perhaps that's why he knows how to write for them.

Since I've got you here, Mr Coscina... Would you mind listening to "It's a Wrap" that I linked to on the thread's first page and tell me whether a composition like this could actually be played/sung by an orchestra and choir? With all the secondary (and even tertiary!) lines, it would boggle my mind. I guess it would have to be performed and recorded with separate sections?

Ta! smile

As far as I know, the lousy sound quality on this release was never addressed, even though the composer indicated that something better would come later in the year. Did I miss something?

It IS baffling, yet it happens ALL THE TIME. The sheer amount of music out there that's been upsampled from Mp3 to lossless (and even 24bit lossless) AND EVEN RELEASED ON CD is staggering.

Hell even some many members here may have. Two that come to mind is Trevor Jones's score to Loch Ness - (not surprising it's fucked up given the record label), as well as the Austin Wintory's score for the game Journey. Hell I've even come across a CD release that was transcoded where the FREE Bandcamp lossless release was fine.

Update: TB wrote on Facebook that a true lossless version of American Dream will be released next week! (Finally! smile)

Another update from today from TB: "There were some issues with the initial release of American Dream where the master had gone through a reduction in bitrate. The new version will be crystal clear, much more dynamic and natural sounding for those audio aficionados out there"

The remastered version is now up on the iTunes store, and it sounds much, much better. I assume it is also available from other digital outlets. Beware, though, the 2018 version is also still in the iTunes store.

Thanks for the heads up.

Haven't checked the details yet but I get the feeling that this new version is being sold separately rather than being offered as a replacement for the 2018 version. I hope I am wrong.

Thats great to have at least a proper mp3, but has anybody found where the supposed lossless version is available? Don't see it on 7digital or hdtracks.

Well, that version has been there since July of last year, so I'm assuming it's also the crappy version that needed to be replaced.

Anyone who enjoyed AMERICAN DREAM should give a listen to Bergersen's latest release, HUMANITY: CHAPTER III. It is freakin' fantastic! The best piece on the album (imho), "Love Suite," is certainly my new favorite work by Bergersen. He really pulls out all the stops on this one, and his own love of John Williams is very much in evidence.
