I haven't listened to this score in a long time, but back in the day Clint Mansell's Requiem for a Dream certainly qualified as a favorite avant-garde score. I like and very much agree with a lot of the ones mentioned in this thread already: Fiedel's Terminator, Goldsmith's Alien, Vangelis' Blade Runner, Goldenthal's Alien 3 (and Batman Forever for that matter), definitely Daft Punk's TRON: Legacy. I would add several scores by John Carpenter, especially Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, and Big Trouble in Little China. Also FDR's Le Samouraï and the electronic elements in John Barry's On Her Majesty's Secret Service qualify. Kenji Kawai's Ghost in the Shell. John Murphy's 28 Days Later and Sunshine qualify as well I'd think.

Some good choices, and some others that I wouldn't categorize as Avant-Garde, but whatever. Here are a few I don't think have been mentioned yet. Danton - Jean Prodromides Under the Skin - Mica Levi The Legend of Hell House - Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson Altered States - John Corigliano Swann in Love - Hans Werner Henze

Williams' IMAGES is high up there on my list. But I have loads others. Will mention a few when I get more time. I'm sure you will. Please limit your choices to films American filmgoers have familiarity. I don't get it. IMAGES was an Oscar nominated score to a Robert Altman film when he was at his early peak. I was referring to Thor's 'threat' to mention "loads of OTHERS". That usually means lots of composers with unpronounceable names. Lol!

Alien³ Images Blade Runner should not be considered avant-garde

More Barry: not the entire score but the riot cue in Day of the Locust was inspired by Penderecki.
