GBU - 2 years late!! Ha ha.
Tough choices there. All great.

At a push id probably - for technical and inventive reasons - have to go for Pota.

Here's an unequivocal vote from a John Barry fan for Jerry Goldsmith's PLANET OF THE APES.

Agree with those also praising Rota's ROMEO & JULIET (and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, of course).

The Lion In Winter

The Lion in Winter is a great score, but--

For me two films for me compete for the greatest score ever written:

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
and
Planet of the Apes

Apes is truly a great score. It enhances the "alien-ness" of the place. It convinces you that you are in a place completely other than where you were.

For me, The Lion in Winter is a haunting work: the chorus in the main title just reeks of evil; the music for Eleanor's arrival is one of Barry's most sublime, and that choral piece that accompanies the herb garden scene is just gorgeous. That being said, that group of nominated scores may be the best ever. If I had to pick one of those scores, The Lion in Winter is the one. POTA is innovative, brilliant, and deservedly praised, but I think those other three scores don't get the attention they deserve. Schifrin's The Fox is a chilling, lonely chamber piece that also contains an incredible theme. Legrand's score is highly regarded, and Alex North's Shoes of the Fisherman is . . . well, it's Alex North.

I vote for the library cues used for George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. I listen to that soundtrack more than any other 1968 score.

I know...not an original score, but still....

Seems to be a battle here between John's lion and Jerry's apes, with the lion sprinting into the lead. I suppose Alex's fish had no chance on dry land, but I'm genuinely surprised that Lalo's fox has been left way behind. I think it's a truly exceptional animal/score. In fact, as I mentioned before, they should have all won.

big grin

Yup! All worthy.

My all-time favorite of Barry vs. one of my favorites of Goldsmith.

Gun, please...

Right!?

It took me a while to warm up to the Planet of the Apes score but once it clicked...

This is such an amazing set of nominations that's it's very hard to choose... but I would have to go with "The Fox," which for me is Schifrin's masterpiece.

Yeah, for me The Fox is Schifrin's best, along with Cool Hand Luke, with Bullitt pretty close, just a couple of car lanes behind.

I'm going to have to give a listen to Schifrin's THE FOX. A couple of glowing reviews here.

Not familiar with it at all.

Yes, it is definitely quite nice. And surely joining as one of my favorite Schifrin scores. Really love his La Peau. Thanks for the heads up guys.

I really never heard it before. Enjoy!

La Peau ( La Pelle) (The Skin) has got to be my all time favorite Lalo Schifrin. Simply gorgeous!

Don't know which version of The Fox you listened to, but I think the original is much better than the re-recording. I'll check out La Pelle--one of the few Schifrin scores I don't have.

Who would you have voted for or who do you think should have won?

Now yer 50 years too late, zooba, but since you asked:

1. Les Biches by Pierre Jansen
2. No Way To Treat A Lady by Stanley Myers
3. Rapporto Fuller, base Stoccolma by Armando Trovajoli
4. Dark of the Sun by Jacques Loussier
5. Shalako by Robert Farnon

And the winner is ... Pierre Jansen for Les Biches

Nice selection. And my pick is: Jacques Loussier for Dark of the Sun

I liked Barry's score for "The Lion In Winter" though my first choice would've been Goldsmith's score for "Planet Of The Apes".

C'era una volta il west

Gets my vote. Probably the most popular score as well?

I'm fine with THE LION IN WINTER, but probably would have voted for PLANET OF THE APES myself. Also: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY was unfortunately missing from the list. In any case, a great selection of worthy scores got nominated, can't include them all. LION IN WINTER is certainly one of Barry's strongest scores ever, and was indeed Oscar worthy.

ZardozSpeaks: Thanks for bringing up No Way To Treat a Lady. Stanley Myers deserves more recognition for his sixties scores.

Other scores worth of mention: "Svezia, inferno e paradiso" by Piero Umiliani, with the "Mah nà mah nà" tune it is certainly among the genre defining lounge soundtrack. "Astérix et cléopâtre" by Gérard Calvi has problably some of the most recognisable french tunes for a soundtrack. "Treize jours en france" by Francis Lai is also quite a nice album and would be in my top 3 of the year. In other Morricone works apart from "C'era una volta il west", I think Teorema makes a nice album on its own.

My personal favourite from 1968 may be "I Giovanni Tigri". No idea how it works as a sondtrack as I haven't seen the movie.

For english language movies, "BULLIT", "ROMEO & JULIET" and "THE LION IN WINTER" would be my top 3.

C' ERA UNA VOLTA IL WEST had its US release in 1969 - not eligible for the 1968 Academy Awards.
