Three (*) of those missing 8 tracks are available on CD but it's the last one of the 40CD set Phase Four Stereo Crossover Collection - see: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phase-Four-Stereo-Crossover-Collection/dp/B01M03SMUY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=phase+4+cross-over&qid=1559026913&s=music&sr=1-1-catcorr

A bit too expensive for me, given I have a number of those albums already. frown

Well, thanks for that information, which is news to me! And I find this a little stunning: a 40-disc set? And it works out to just over $2 per CD, if the booklets are considered free? That's insanely cheap by our boutique label standards over here.

But more to the point: with all that space, they included only 24 of Roland Shaw's spy music tracks. And seven of those are non-Bond themes. Meaning they included 17 of Shaw's 35 James Bond tracks.

Discs 39 and 40 are the Shaw LP programs of Themes for Secret Agents and Themes from the James Bond Thrillers, Vol. 3, a favorite of mine. All three of Shaw's previously unavailable Bond tracks are from the Volume 3 LP.

Agreed ... looking at Roland Shaw LPs in Discogs, many of the recordings were re-released and so this Phase 4 Box Set picked up 2 of the albums (as you mention) with no duplications. In my earliest record collecting days I had a compilation vinyl album which carried three of the non-JB007 RS recordings but I've never got these on CD (The Saint, The Avengers and I Spy) ... all from album 39 in that collection.

There are numerous box sets of CDs available which are often at very good (i.e. low) prices ... I've bought many! ... and if your taste is classical/concert hall then you're spoiled for choice. Downside (apart from overall spend and storage considerations) is duplication but at an average cost of under GBP2.00 per CD this is manageable.

The earlier Phase 4 collection (see: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Phase-Stereo-Concert-Various-Artists/dp/B00LP298NC/ref=sr_1_2?crid=35GCBTTUW929B&keywords=phase+4+box+set&qid=1559040914&s=music&sprefix=phase+4+%2Caps%2C138&sr=1-2-catcorr) includes the Bernard Herrmann albums: The Great Movie Thrillers (1968) and The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann (1973) plus Miklós Rózsa's1976 re-recording of Ben Hur. Generally good, albeit as a collection of serious music it has its limitations.

But if you want to hear Sean Connery - in his best James Bond voice - narrate Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, Op.67* and Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op.34 (1966) ... look no further!

*- includes the immortal line ... the dumb duck quacked ... smile ... James Bond style!

Would love a CD containing all of the Gunbarrel sequence themes.

I have a few I made myself. however would be nice to have an "official" release.

All this talk of Roland Shaw had me grooving to Beneath Disco Volante and 007 on the way to work this morning. Man does that drum kit action work in 007!

I was listening to my iTunes rip of the Poker/Cherry Red release and boy does it sound worse than I remember. (I also have the old Decca CD from the early years of CD).

So thanks for pointing out the '96 release - just ordered that for a most decent price on ebay.

That's good: when you have a chance to A/B the common tracks, we can get an informed, first-hand impression of how great the difference really is.

To be honest, it's only John Barry's scores for the Roger Moore films that I'm really interested in. The Connerys and the Lazenby are well enough served by their original releases or current expansions (), as are Live And Let Die and For Your Eyes Only. Moonraker, Golden Gun, Octopussy and View To A Kill are the big four for me, plus Kamen's Licence To Kill (I've never been able to tell how much unreleased music is in there and how much is tracked and repeated). Personally I've never really cared for Spy Who Loved Me, either the film, score or album: for me it's the weakest of Moore's films and Hamlisch was as bizarre a choice as Eric Serra (though I'll admit I do love Bond 77). I'm also reasonably happy with the Brosnans and Craigs (if anyone can actually be happy with something as underwhelming as Skyfall), and I don't miss the odd unreleased cue here and there - expanding OHMSS or You Only Live Twice was a different matter since there was so much missing music.

I would have thought Dutton Vocalion would be a good label to release the Shaw compilations, but no luck so far, it seems.

The Poker/Cherry Red atrocity may very well have derailed any other label's thoughts or plans of releasing the Shaw material.

As ZapBrannigan says, there's no problem though with the 'World of James Bond Adventure' release.

Other than that it's out of print!

So Zap, I just got The World of James Bond Adventure from the mid 1990s. My key track is 007 - and it's clearly better - less boosted, less distorted than the later Cherry Red version. Also means its not as present. Clearly the tape anomalies are the same (like the glitch when the strings take the melody). Easier on the ears.

And listening A/B to the James Bond theme - again the 90's release is just more enjoyable, less taxing to listen to.

I will say the Cherry Red version works well for in-car driving, but this is a pleasanter listen. I'll be keeping both in my cloud library.

And man, did Roland Shaw ever know how to do these covers!

My preference would be those scores which did not get remastered and expanded before.

And of those I would love those the most:

1. MOONRAKER
2. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
3. LICENCE TO KILL
4. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
5. A VIEW TO A KILL
6. OCTOPUSSY

Me too! Same titles!

All of these did get a remaster (except Licence to Kill) but not expanded.

Still, this is a great list, not because they're the best Bond scores, but because there is a lot of great music here not yet commercially available.

My top five ordering for expansion/re-recording (whatever is possible) would be...

1. Moonraker
2. The Spy Who Loved Me
3. A View to a Kill
4. Licence to Kill
5. Octopussy
6. The Man With the Golden Gun

Thanks for the update, Sean! I agree, Shaw's 007 track is fantastic.

I have the remaining eight Bond tracks from vinyl sources, btw. Feel free to drop me an email and say Hi. Just click my name.

Just do all of them. Follow the guidelines for success:

- 100% complete
- Include source music
- Arrange in film order
- Include film and album versions of edits (e.g. Spy Who Loved Me ski chase / car chase / submarine chase) and alternates, and include on separate CDs if necessary (e.g. Monty Norman's unused Dr. No music)
- Include all the gunbarrel music from each film.
- Don't crossfades cues
- Don't combine cues, even if they're short - but if they must be combined, only combine them chronologically (You Only Live Twice was terrible with this, combining cues that occur at totally different parts in the film making the chronological order impossible)

Prioritize based on what hasn't yet been released as expanded ( * = 1st priority):

* Dr. No
* From Russia With Love (the train music in particular)
Goldfinger
Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Diamonds Are Forever
Live And Let Die
* The Man With The Golden Gun
* The Spy Who Loved Me (all the chase music, as heard and edited in the film, not that crappy Bond 77 album remix)
* Moonraker
For Your Eyes Only
* Octopussy
* A View To A Kill
The Living Daylights
* Licence To Kill
* Goldeneye (EVERYTHING, including separate tracks for repeated sections of "Run, Shoot, Jump" - doesn't matter if it's been tracked, it would just be nice to be presented as-is on the soundtrack).
Tomorrow Never Dies

The World Is Not Enough: already done
Die Another Day: already done

Daniel Craig: don't care

If all of these were complete, and that required multiple discs, I would absolutely pay full price for all of them.

I think in Goldeneye where they repeat Run Shoot Jump for the Satellite scene, there is an added orchestral piece in the middle of it, so that would certainly be worth including.

LOL. "Works well for in-car driving" = seriously overmodulated. Can't you just turn up the volume on the Deram release until it's distorted and achieve the same effect? wink
