Brandi made a great Fletcher Christian, certainly better than Gable.
The box office was quite good. Twas one of.the highest grossing films of the year.
The fact that the studio list money on the film, due to financial mismanagement, shouldn't detract from the positives.

When I saw it at the Egyptian Theater in 70mm, I thought it was incredible - everything - the script, the acting, and especially the Kaper score. I bought the LP box soundtrack, I had the souvenir program, and I went back about eight times over the course of its run. I still enjoy it, and wish Warners would do right by it.

Mutiny On The Bounty was a popular release, & did very well at the box office, but as they managed to burn through $19,000,000 on the production, they didn't stand a chance of turning a profit (& the same with Cleopatra, a popular film that also did very well, but with the huge amount spent on it...).
Here's a bit of a review from an issue of Films & Filming Jan.63:
"The first appearance of Brando, foppish in silver-grey & with a crimson cloak, speaking with a "cod" public-school accent, is an entirely original conception of Fletcher Christian (no other actor in Hollywood would have dared play it for comedy, no other actor would have bought it off) it catches the audience completely off-guard - as it seems to have caught Trevor Howard, ploughing along giving a straight performance in the backwash of this diversion."
