Well, may I suggest THE SOUND AND THE FURY as a good way to come down to earth when your outer space endeavour ends? I've always considered this sultry score as one of North's best!

Don't have it.

My favourite North will forever and always be THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY. Love those modern takes on religious music.

Those are the kinds of albums I avoid. That title alone is a complete turnoff.

Well, if you want more tailormade suggestions to your taste, you'd need more specific parameters (beyond what I already know about you). I'm guessing you want more jazz, for one. Or wildly experimental.

I agree about Sound and the Fury. The complete album is on youtube.

Oh, well I would say that being turned off by certain titles is less about taste in music than it is about marketing decisions. A&E may have great music, but the title is a complete turnoff.

There was actually a film once called "The Nun's Story." Can you think of a title that would make you want to see a film any less than that?

Oh, come on. Titles like "The Agony and the Ecstasy" scream of pomposity, self-conscious importance, and push-button Oscar-worthiness: everything that your beloved albino koala seeks to avoid in his film choices.

Never really cared about titles, unless they're really, really generic. I tend to care more about the films themselves. THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY is a fine film, from what I can remember; never read the 1961 novel, though. I'm guessing it refers to the turmoil of Michelangelo's struggles (his ups and downs) while creating the Sistine Chapel; as mirrored in the Christ himself.

They should have called it "Bipolar." Catchier, less pompous, and more to the point.

It was released on CD by Varèse Sarabande in the early 90s. Used copies don't seem hard to find.

It's an excellent score, indeed.

No other fans of "I'll Cry Tomorrow"? Damn you all to Hell.

Sure, it may be to Streetcar what Joy in the Morning is to Vertigo, but it's still a wonderfully atmospheric, immersive score.

There's also Susan F_ckin' Hayward. big grin Her vocal on the title song is transplendent.

Shanks is rarely mentioned but it's a great score:

Orchestrated by Henry Brant:

The mezzo-soprano part is really interesting to compare.

Is there a hi-rez option? I won't pay those prices for mp3s.

Well, it's now or never. I'm going to finally force myself to love Alex North's music.

Everyone is invited, from the Alex North experts to the neophytes.

I'm starting in the outer space/fantasy section of my accumulation, with North's score for a 1950s industrial film, "Decision for Chemistry."

If you're interested in learning about North's music from a study of his compositional style and approach, check out video excerpts from the recent Scorings Arts event here in Los Angeles. I attended and it was really great. The study focused mainly on The Misfits and North's rejected 2001 score.

Fabulous! Until attending this event, I was only aware of The Misfits by reputation, I hadn't seen the movie nor heard the score. I own maybe 10-12 North scores, but that wasn't one of them. After this event, I immediately ordered a copy of the album, mainly for that big "round-up" set piece, which is simply incredible.
