Wow, great find! It isn't easy to find a lot of songs by The Innocents on Youtube, especially because there's also apparently an Australian band by the same name.
I read somewhere that Charles Chaplin couldn't read or write music and had someone who would put his music on paper and record it for him. Like other forms of art, you don't need to know all the technical aspects of things to be inspired and creative.

Initial creative and inspirational ideas are the most important part of it all, but when you’re dealing in various musical “settings “ , the arrangement/orchestration is of the utmost importance. To go way back to the Tin Pan Alley days, the super standard Stardust by the great Hoagy Charmichael was first written as an upbeat song. But when Victor Young got his hands on it he turned it into the beautiful ballad we all know .....Now he needed the original notes from Charmichael but......Another way to look at it is - have you ever heard one of your favorite songs from yesterday or today done by someone other than the original artist and really not liking it even though it's the same song? It's all in the arrangement ( most of the time )! One of my absolute favorite songs is Cole Porter's True Love from High Society. Gorgeous arrangement in the film, but I've heard some terrible versions of it to make me never want to hear this song again. Like I said, it’s in the arrangement and those that have that gift to contribute to it...
Some film composers have that special talent for a great theme or motif but need help realizing it in an orchestral setting... Having said all that I don’t know how “complete “ Convertino’s ideas were. And most people don't really care!
