The Swimmer is on the box in the UK this week. I'll be taking a peep. It was an early FSM for me. Unfortunately, most Hamlisch scores go by on DvD. Better than nowt.
Well I just found a copy of SHIRLEY VALENTINE, so NOW I have all of Hamlisch's soundtracks.
I just realized that the song was Oscar-nominated. (It lost to "Under the Sea" from THE LITTLE MERMAID.) Patti Austin provides the vocal. Although the song plays over both the opening and the closing credits of the film, amazingly the song is not credited in either place. At least not in the credits shown here. But the Academy recognized it nonetheless:
I love Hamlisch’s scores especially Sophie’s Choice and Ordinary People.
If you’re going to start collecting Hamlisch’s musicals, one of his “flops” was the musical “Smile” with lyrics by Howard Ashman. A demo of this score can be found on the Ashman sings Ashman CD.
I don't have a single Hamlisch soundtrack. Maybe a track on a compilation somewhere if I'm lucky. But I've been wanting to get ICE CASTLES -- not because of Hamlisch, but because the soundtrack contains Alan Parsons Project's "Voyager". I obviously have that track on the PYRAMID album already, but I'm curious how it fits in with the rest of the score. It's very rare that APP appears on soundtracks.
