I mean, he scored a Star Wars film that had a decent amount of violence...though I guess I don’t know how much more violent this film is going to be.

Aye, but SOLO was fantasy sci-fi violence and conflict.
And the opportunity to work on Star Wars and with John Williams.
This film looks way more adult, gritty and real.

If you think that's the reason, well, it isn't

He score Jason Bourne (and that movie is almost two years prior of Solo) and you get listen the album his was bumed working with Greengrass, again, after the hell he pass in Green Zone.

Also, Powell only wants to score animated and family fare these days.
He deliberately steers clear of adult violence and conflict in films.

I thought that turn was less about violence as an abstract and more about violence for violence's sake, right? Like movies that glorify and indulge in violence without having anything else to say? From its synopsis, and given that Hanks and Greengrass are involved, it seems like this movie will be About Something. To SoldierofFortune's point, it seems like it was more about Greengrass than the material.

Still, I'd love to see him do a pure western at some point.

CD (digipack packaging) - Back Lot Music USA - December 18, 2020.

Great news! A new JNH CD release is always welcome news. I hope it is good, the scores of Greengrass movies can go either way.

By the way, News of the World is one of the best novels I've read in the past two years. Just 200 pages of magic, almost poetic, with enough of a story to propel it along. Will make a good movie if Tom Hanks plays it straight, the young actress is good, and the director doesn't try to clutter up the movie but lets the story breathe.

The young actress is very good judging from her latest film, Systemsprenger, which was probably the best movie I've seen in a long time. She absolutely broke my heart in that movie.

I like the more downtempo Americana stuff, or the lyrical parts. But it's also plagued by a lot of contemporary, soulless ostinato-isms. A few tracks that just drag. And it's far too long at 71 minutes, with some short tracks that barely get going before it's over. It's a far cry from A HIDDEN LIFE, or the other western scores he's done, but still one of the year's highlights. That says something about the high standard JNH is capable of, I think.

Another one added to the list that I need to whittle down; I think a 50-minute playlist or so will improve the whole impression a couple of notches.

Looks like this film is bypassing UK cinemas (it was due to be released early January) and going straight to Netflix.
I was looking forward to seeing it in a cinema, but hey ho.

The US is the only country getting a brief theatrical release, it was sold to Netflix for international distribution.

Listened a couple of times, is JNH in pure form, style and capable of create emotions, isn't Wyatt Earp, so?, is a bad score, for no goes in that style?, hell no.

Howard gaves gravitas to the journey of the characters in the movie, given emotional weight in most of the movie scenes, even the the action is dark, but given the subejct matter (even to this day, some people hate scores like The Homesman for not going 3:10 to Yuma style) works tremendously well and solid in the movie, and is for what movie music is for.
