Yes, it was always believed that LP was a re-record and alteration of the tracks, especially the Trio - and that was always the problem. It was one of the worst LP presentations of one of the greatest scores of all time. Thank heavens for the work of the guys on the expanded - GDM, Winkler, ehresmann, who gave us a much more accurate presentation, with most of the missing key tracks included.

This one sounds great, though. Look forward to getting it.

EDIT later in the thread it comes to light that the LP wasnt a rerecord, but mixed differently. Only the Triello was redone. In good faith I was going on 50 years of many fans conclusions that film and LP sounded so vastly different on a couple of tracks it was therefore a rerecord. At least we have had the situation clarified.

I am trying to decide if I need or even want that much more music than the 55-minute version. I have more Morricone than any other composer. When is enough enough?

I guess having the guts to ask the question in the first place can be considered a step in the right direction. On the other hand, even the need to ask the question suggests that I have a long way to go...

I am having the same debate with myself!

55? Mine is 59. A tad on the long side as it is; I'm considering going for the OST instead.

I agree with Thor. This is one of those scores that works better in an abbreviated form. All those million versions of human screams and strange noises are indeed too much. 3CDs? Wow!

You can easily program the album version from the expanded version without having to hack up any individual tracks.

Fingers crossed they managed to uncover original session tapes for the other two scores too perhaps.

Yes, and as far as I aware the two other scores would have the same right owners?

I've been waiting for this release since I saw the film in 1968.

Finally, a dream come true.

Thanks Quartet.

OMG, some of you people are so fucking predictable in your responses.

Ya know, if you don't like the presentation, don't fucking buy it.

I'd love to see something similar for Once Upon a Time in the West but since that's in the death grip of Sony, I doubt it'll happen.

Some of us are still trying to decide. Is that OK?

Yes, I don't think the 3CDs are meant to be listened to consecutively. :-)

I have the OST presentation on an old RCA Italy disc I've had for years, which also has the OST of the other 2 films. Served me well, until the expansions and the rerecording came about though I still listen to it occasionally.

(The 2004 US EMI expanded release is 55 mins - it has a couple of tracks slightly shortened).

I don’t care if it’s mono a mono.

The samples sound amazing. I will pick this up sometime in the future. I think Quartet again, have outdone themselves with a final year batch. Bravo!

Mono is the sound of one hand clapping. Or some claptrap like that.
