I'm curious: What does "five star episode" signify, if it can so often be mediocre?

In my opening post I state I am using a ten-star rating system.

CONTINUED: EDMOND O'BRIEN (February 3, 1950 to June 5, 1952):

"The Leland Blackburn Matter"
"with music by Wilbur Watch"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc9deKaBPW8

Highlights:
  • 3:24 in. I'm pretty sure this is the first example of a cue that ended up getting tracked into some episodes during the Bob Bailey run.
  • 5:20 in.
  • 10:56 in.
  • 13:19 in.
  • 16:02 in.

    Five-star episode.

Dollar: "Murder is a hard thing to ignore."

  • 21:09 in.
  • 23:02 in.
  • 25:32 in.

    Five-star episode.

A surprisingly amount of dramatic weight to the music, considering there's nothing remarkable or particularly inspiring about the episode. It's as bland and forgettable as the previous episodes.

Unusually dramatic scores for these last two episode scores.

    "The Mickey McQueen Matter"

I swear I covered this episode, but I could not find the name "McQueen" in the thread. Maybe it was mislabeled. And this one seems tighter and re-written some. Still doesn't raise the star-rating.

Even though no composer is credited, it's clear as day the previous episode score was also by Eddie Dunstedter.

These on-the-cheap organ scores have really brought the show down. IT was already boring as it is with the mediocre scripts and O'Brien as the lead. This did not help.

I'm going with "'49" since I have a hard time buying an insurance investigator that attracts all kinds of women, runs, gets into fight, and still appears to be healthy when he should be in his 70's. STARTING: JOHN LUND (November 24, 1952 to September 19, 1954):

Well, I hope the writing gets better. I've not listened to an episode by Lund before, so I don't know what to expect. Got to be better than Edmund O'Brien.

    "The Walter Patterson Matter"
    "with music by Eddie Dunstedter"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrtXKn6NH5g

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

A borderline six-star episode. It's not really that boring, a little engaging, and the writing for the first half works. And its keeps a little guessing going through most of the episode.

The end credits are cut off, but it's clear this is the unmistakable organ tyranny of Eddie Dunstedter. I kept the quote credits since they've never said his credit any other way, so it just goes without saying/changing...

    Out-of-context quote...
Dollar: "Maybe this will help; take a look at this..."

Well, so far the writing isn't any better and the voicing is only a smidge better under Lund.

    "The King's Necklace Matter"
    "with music by Eddie Dunstedter"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0OUXtWlyhw

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

Rather boring borderline six-star episode. Same of the banter between Dollar and the elderly husband knocked the episode up a notch.

Dollar: "Remarks: with all due deference to my profession -- sometimes this is a lousy business."

    "The Syndicate Matter"

    Highlights:
  • 14:38 in.

    Standard six-star episode.

The unmistakable organ tyranny of Dunstedter. For some needless reason a new cue has been added after Dollar hangs up from phone calls after the opening of episodes. I say "needless" because just cutting to the opening theme works just the same, and it does that immediately after this short new cue ends anyway. The Needless Cue Matter,

    "The Lester James Matter"
    "with music by Eddie Dunstedter"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO8o-Nl1g1U

    NOTE: Ending is missing.

    Highlights:
  • 10:02 in.

In a later comparison: the gas poisoning scene here is boring, but the one heard in a Bob Bailey-era episode, is dramatic and moving. I'll make sure to note that episode when I come to it probably next year. In fact, I might say it's a remake of this episode, because two later plot points are identical; I'll also note if this is correct, next year.

    "The Enoch Arden Matter"
    "with music by Milton Charles"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiVGU4runwo

This is presumably the first effort by Charles for the series (given some previous episodes had the credits cut off, and his also employed the organ tyranny that Dunstedter had).

  • 13:45 in.

    Boring five-star episode.

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

    Borderline six-star episode.

After listening to these Wrigley Spearmint chewing gum commercials, you'd think it could cure cancer and death, too. Why go to a doctor when you can just chew Wrigley Spearmint gum?

    Highlights:
  • Nothing.

A six-and-a-half star episode. Bumped up because of the peaceful, although kind of tense, ending. I wasn't expecting one of those Bob Bailey-era-like endings that aren't action packed, but quiet and talkative.

    Out-of-context quotes...
Dollar: "I want Olsen working on me during the whole work out, especially when I'm on the rubbing table."

"Let's go back to the rub table before you cool off."

b]Dollar: "You don't mind going back in there, do you?"

    Boring five-star episode.

    "with music by Milton Charles"

    Highlights:

here must be at least three episodes throughout the run of the series where a stolen coat turns up on a woman. A woman who never wants to answer.

    Boring five-star episode.

    "The Oklahoma Red Matter"
    ?????
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TecWCdT1x5w

Note: The audio quality is rather poor. You practically have to stop whatever you are doing to focus on the episode to make out the dialogue. The end credits is also cut off, so I don't know if it's music by Dunstedter or Charles.

    Highlights:
  • 25:53 in.

Boring five-star episode. I admit the episode was so relentlessly boring that about 75% into it, I bailed skipped to the end.

    "The Emil Carter Matter"
    "with music by Eddie Dunstedter"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=628ytQa1RlU

    Boring five-star episode.

Can you believe it? I'm only five more batch days (doing ten episodes a day) away from starting the Bob Baily episodes! Feels like it's been forever. Hopefully I'll finish Lund's run by Friday, then sometime late November, start Baily.

Sorry these aren't bound scores, but they are the original bound CBS scripts, with all hand-written notations, corrections and cuts (!) made prior to transcription.
