And that's without Bernard Herrmann getting cue sheet credit for the Psycho parody bit... but to be fair how would this look for a Carl Stalling score, if all the referenced composers were included?

I remember Joe Dante saying in an interview that the entire "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" production was comprised of grueling debates and compromise, so with that considered it's pretty amazing that a score with such a distinctive personality wasn't rejected (though a lot of it was mixed in pretty low, from what I recall). A very fun, colorful, and lively work that was in great need of expansion.

I always thought it was pretty restrained for a Dante effort. I'd love to have seen what was originally intended. Hell, I'd love to see him able to make his Termite Terrace feature about the goings on behind the scenes of all those animated shorts, but he said Warner Bros. is far more interested in Space Jam 2 and other assorted garbage.

Did you order from the international store or are you stateside like me?

My credit card is showing SP * VARESE SARABANDE AUSTIN AK for my "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" order, and this is usually what appears on my card statement.

I did and already received my shipping notice. I assume it's legitimate since they are using a new shipping service in TX (via their newsletter).

This came about an hour ago. Now getting a spin, not my favourite by him. Nevertheless still enjoying it , somewhat. After all it's like getting a new Jerry. Recording sounds fine, though. Came in four days, in Blighty.

Good to know it was just a poorly-worded interview and therefore the score should be complete.

Yeah, mine came this morning to ‘sunny’ Scotland. Have to applaud the Varese International shop service. Might watch the film tonight.

The booklet notes mention that it was hard work restoring the soundtrack from an older digital tech and it is only 99.5% complete. smile

Great release. Some audio oddities throughout - some cues don’t sound right. Also the big one - Area 52, what happened to that theramin style sound (was it a human voice) It sounds like demo synth for want of a better description.. Did it sound that way in the movie? Not a problem as the album version is on disc 2, but it really stood out.

URGH. I hope this doesn't turn out to be another Air Force One.... Mine shipped today.

Regarding "Area 52," what is being referred to as a "theremin style sound" is actually a wordless Les Baxter-style vocal.

and here it is in the film (beginning at 2:02):

This does bring to mind a question, though: did Jerry Goldsmith ever compose for theremin?

I can't think of a single cue in his filmography, but there are still quite a few (mainly television) scores by him I haven't heard. It's slightly surprising if he never did, given that I believe one his favorites scores was Miklos Rozsa's "Spellbound."

That’s it. Well, the film sounds like the album version. The version on Disc 1 is quite clearly a synth demo vocal, similar to the demo from The Sum of All Fears. It’s quite jarring as it doesn’t sound particularly good. I’ve not read the notes yet but i’m sure there is a good reason...

I'm pretty sure he used theremin for the cue "The Latest Victim" from THE MEPHISTO WALTZ. It can be heard voicing the main theme, doubled with echoplexed piano.

I haven't heard the score in years, but I think I remember him mentioning using theremin in SHOCK TREATMENT.

The vocal was performed by Sally Stevens. Someone on this board was present when that cue was recorded, and might tell the tale. You really should take a look at her credits as a vocalist; it's an astounding list. We've heard her voice in the music from Raimi's Spiderman movies, a fair number of Pixar pictures, Mars Attacks, Apollo 13, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Rudy, The Last of the Mohicans, Dances with Wolves, The Abyss, Batman ('89), Empire of the Sun, Poltergeist I & II, Brainstorm, The Secret of NIMH, Airplane!, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Amityville Horror, The Muppet Movie, Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, Klute, MASH, Doctor Zhivago, The Sound of Music, The Greatest Story Ever Told, How the West Was Won . . .

I mean, good grief, what a career!

But is it on this album - on disc 1? Or has it now a synth as per the above post?

Mine just arrived but can't listen until later today.

Disc 1 has the synth. The film track is in the album presentation on disc 2. A little rearranging and swapping around of tracks, and all may be well.

I wonder why they chose to use the synth for the full score on disc 1? I'm still waiting for my copy so I haven't read the liner notes yet to see if there was a reason.

I have to say the album as a whole sounds absolutely tremendous. The score presentation on disc 1 has a very different mix to the original CD.

Curiously, there is mention in the liner notes of a "theremin-like sound" in the "Area 52" cue along with the other beeps and whistles that are now very clear. No mention of a female vocalist.
