I’m sort of tired of hearing just how amazing every release is. Come on enough. He says what’s missing that matters? For real, just wait, this will get released in complete form and then it’ll be “this is such a miracle!” Yada, yada, yada.

Every score may not be amazing but in this marketplace and with production constraints and return on investment and everything else, every release is kind of amazing. We're talking about a physical release of a soundtrack to a relatively obscure 35-year-old movie. Just that it exists is amazing. I'm not saying everyone has to like everything or blow smoke up anyone's ass, but there's nothing wrong with appreciating that something was released at all.

I'm not sure that something is always better than nothing. Like Intrada's Mackenna's Gold with a wretched pop version of "Old Turkey Buzzard" from a European release rather than the US album's far superior film version. Better if that CD had not been released at all, so that we could still be hopeful of getting the better version at some point.

Why not the complete score?

Because they’ll have you buy this first then release the complete score in about a year or so.

Nah, give it six months.

Hahaha.

But, seriously, why not a complete score? Lost tapes? Not much music unreleased?

Fair question. It really came down to priorities and the amount of larger projects needing an expansion. Since the LP was a such a great, representative program we thought we wanted to get it out as is and focus our expansion efforts on bigger titles. It's not out of the question that in 6 months we'll expand it. (Kidding -- but we did revisit Shogun years later and I keep my eye on reissuing Hindenburg in expanded form). But for now we wanted folks to enjoy this album.

How much score is missing anyway? Another poster said in the other thread that he recalls there being more score on this old album than in the film. How much was recorded?

Well, what's missing that matters exactly from the album?

God knows how long it took INTRADA to clear the album music and what it cost.

Just remember the old saying "Dying is Easy, COMEDY IS HARD"

Comedy scores overall aren't the biggest sellers to start with and the fact they got this out is rather amazing at this point.

Looking forward to picking it up myself.

So you answer my question with a... question?

This makes no sense.

There's definitely more music in the film. Lots of very short cues, though. But probably some good unreleased stuff. Someday. It's an iterative process.

Technically everything used in the film (or recorded for it, whether it was used in the film or not) is unreleased, since it was a completely different recording done in the States rather the UK like the seven album cuts.

Before we bully Thaxton any further, let me put in my two bits. I’m sure Intrada did their best to make this CD reissue possible. I too wish they could have licensed the complete score, as well as the end title theme by Rod Stewart (that should have been made clear by Intrada). Of course we should remember that Universal Music was spun off from Universal Pictures some years back, which complicates the issue somewhat.

But maybe one day there will be a more definitive edition containing all the music, licensing issues willing.

Hilariously, Rod Stewart's Love Touch, despite being the theme song for the film, has NEVER been on the album, even back in 1986. So Intrada can hardly be faulted for not managing to capture that white whale.

There's about 47 minutes of music from the last time I saw this. The LP was a re-recording so someone with even more time on their hands than me would have to trace exactly what was missing.

I'm always up for more Bernstein (and for a pretty entertaining flick as far as I recall - the kind we don't see anymore, almost totally devoid of cynicism). Nicely done, Intrada. smile

I stand corrected on my previous estimation (in the other thread) that the album re-recording of "Legal Eagles" is longer than the film tracks. Nearly 50 minutes is a lot of score, but I oddly don't remember that much music in the film (admittedly it was 5 years ago when I watched it). I guess the re-arranged/expanded cues on the LP re-recording (which I heard first) made a more lasting impression on me than the film tracks, perhaps because - as Roger wrote - there are a lot of short cues.

I would love to know what Bernstein recorded that wasn't used. I know he scored the ending a few times.

Even though the LP is a great selection of the score, I would LOVE if they could expand The Hindenburg.

Though a higher priority for me is releasing Shire's The Promise on CD, either the LP tracks, or the full score.

Well, pretty much any Shire is a high priority for me. What a wonderful, underappreciated composer.

For those interested, I bet there's nothing more convincing to Roger of the desire for a release of the complete film recording, than the album recording selling well... smile

We better get Conan the Destroyer expanded before we get Legal Eagles expanded, or I'm gonna sick my lawyer Jackie Chiles on Intrada!

I have a vague memory liking Legal Eagles the film and score. I'll check out the samples.

Not only was the album a re-recording, but the cues were re-arranged specifically for listening. "Movin' On" is an arrangement of the films' main theme, heard in short guises throughout the movie, but this a longer self-contained setting. "Tom and Kelly" is comprised of several different short cues from different scenes. Unless I am mistaken, "Legal Eagles Love" was composed specifically for the album.

"Love Touch" did not appear on the original album either. I have the original LP, and there is a disclaimer on the back of the sleeve which says "This album does not contain the Rod Stewart performance of 'Love Touch'".

I'm elated to have this on CD at last. I think it is one of Bernstein's better scores (certainly from that era).

As long as you don't tell me that Artie Butler arranged the album, I'm in. smile

YES!! This was my first Bernstein album when I started collecting (it was in the $1 LP bin at a Waldenbooks) which started my Elmer journey outside of the Ghostbusters soundtrack. Could've sworn it was made on CD then. confused
