Yes, our differing tastes in the face of such usual similarities can be quite strange, but I guess that's what keeps things fun.

If folks are unfamiliar with this score, a good way to form an opinion as to whether you would enjoy it is to imagine a respected composer walking onto a stage, pulling down his pants and bending down with his backside turned towards the audience... and then farting. If that sounds like the kind of thing that might amuse and be fun to listen to and pay money for, S*P*Y*S should appeal immensely.

I really can't fathom the SPYS haters, honestly. I guess it all stems from the synthy main titles with the "spiiiiies" chorus, and the end titles where they come back? Because I can understand someone not liking that. But all the stuff in between is perfectly delightful. Basil's description is nuts. Just imagine a respected composer having a bit of fun, and that's this score. It's hardly him pulling his pants down and mooning us. Good god, are some folks uptight.

How substantial is the score for S*P*Y*S?
There seems to only be a couple 9 minute suites up on youtube.


Well, Varese only included 19 minutes of the score on their pricey rare and OOP Goldsmith at Fox box. That's where those YouTube suites come from. You should still give them as listen as they should inform you about whether you'd like the score...

I already have earlier FSM release of The Stripper (and love it!), so a purchase will come down to how worthwhile the other "S" title is.

If you love The Stripper that much you should know that MV just wrote this in the LLL thread:
"SPYS and STRIPPER are remastered and expanded...also includes Jerry's one FLAMING STAR track"

Very excited to see the full programs and how much more there is for each score. The Stripper was ~45 minutes on FSM and the Varese SPYS suite was almost 19 minutes. So the existing releases of music from both would fit on one CD with plenty of room to spare. The fact that this is a 2-CD set is incredibly exciting to me as a Goldsmith fan!

I did listen to both suites on YT. They didn't register much, positive or negative, beyond wishing the vocals on the theme were not present. I would have enjoyed the playful funky kitsch of it more without them, I think.
But that's why I was wondering how much more to the score there was. If those suites represent about half the extent material up to this point, then I'm not going to feel a need to rush to pick it up just for that (new to me) material.

I'm 100% fine with the FSM release of the Stripper- both content and sound quality. It plays beautifully for me as is.

I'm sure this new release will end up on the shopping list at some point- sooner if the expansions and SQ are notable.

Otherwise I think I'll be prioritizing X-men, a Sarde, and Lionheart (even though I can definitely hear the almost Horner-like callbacks to earlier work sprinkled within it).
Though TBH I would prefer a hi-res download for the latter and the Beltrami, so I may just wait a while on those as well.

Neil Bulk just reminded me that the FSM edition of The Stripper also includes a lot of source music, bringing the time for it on that album to over an hour. (I just didn’t import the source music to my iTunes.) So a 2 CD set makes perfect sense with SPYS being expanded.

Over the decades I've never had the ability to venture into composing. Life however is a great leveller, and here at least is a stage on which I have shown some abilities over the years. That, and Lager drinking. But that was then. I will get this album, or is it All-Bum ?. If only to see what Volume 4 brings. I'm told that all the volumes when finished, arranged in a square pattern will reveal an additional facet. Only time will tell, but I am up for it.

Listening to the suite, I like it better than a large portion of scores that everyone here seems to love....and seriously how can anyone not love that Russian dance cue?


Yeah there's weird synth stuff, but The 'Burbs also has that, and it's one of my favorites by him.

OK, sure, the electro-kazoo/FartBlaster 2000 combo is terribly silly sounding.

No question.

And, yes, you can't help but ask yourself "what the hell was he thinking?".

But … but … the sprightly, tongue-in-cheek material is actually really quite delightfully orchestrated. Indeed, the bits of Russian parody remind me of Desplat's approach in Grand Budapest Hotel.

I'd certainly entertain hearing more than the 19 minutes Varèse released back in 2004.

Good golly, Ms. Molly, S*P*Y*S offers a more satisfying listening experience than 2003's The Vanishing, which I abortively listened to yesterday.

It's so-so. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould make a good team, but the script just lets them down.
