I'm curious how different the release will be from the original.

As it sounds (from Wikipedia at least) that the Varese album was quite an editorial creation/interpretation - highlighting certain sounds, including music not in the film including dialogue etc.

The LLL description doesn't say, perhaps the samples will give a sense. I hope someone who does get this and knows the Varese will be able to speak to to what degree this is a different experience....

I’m thinking the first track on the old album might not be there as that seemed like a sort of intro mix. I’m getting as soon as I get paid though. Great unusual score.

I don't see it on the LLL website. Is it not on there yet?

Mondo is releasing this on vinyl tomorrow:

This week we are excited to continue our ongoing Howard Shore / David Cronenberg soundtrack series with the long-awaited premiere release of the Complete Restored Score to their 1983 masterpiece, VIDEODROME.

Never before released in any format (the original LP release from 1983 is official, but actually a remix album that does not contain the score as featured in the film). We have spent years with Shore's label, Howe Records, and our friends at Back Lot Music to bring this album to you, as the film nears its 40th anniversary.

As always, titles will hit The Mondo Record Shop on Wednesday, 2/23 at 12PM CT.

Not a fan of that Mondo cover. Interesting note about the original release though being a 'remix' album. Looks like my favourite track might not be on the new release after all. Really looking forward to hearing what its like now though.

It is a bit "Stranger Things" now, isn't it? A bit lighthearted-retro when the film is dark dark dark.

I'm really liking the LLL version though.

Here's what Starburst had to say about the soundtrack album back in 1983.

Here's what Starburst had to say about the soundtrack album back in 1983.

I can not say that this review is wrong. The soundtrack is a lot of sound design with no melody or themes, but I like it anyway - it is moody.
However I was amazed by this particular Leslie Ford’s comment on the Beastmaster review: it’s a full blooded orchestral score which managed to capture a genuine sense of majesty and myth which Basil Poldeouris’ compositions failed to do once divorced from the film of Conan The Barbarian.
Bestmaster is indeed a very good score, but the comment on Conan…

Fun fact: Deborah Harry was in two films scored by Howard Shore (the other one's Cop Land).

Anyone got this yet that can compare it to the original release?

I got this on Saturday. The CD is essentially what I thought it would be. In my opinion, this new CD and the Varese CD, despite presenting much of the same music, represent substantially different albums. They are different enough for me to hold onto my copy of the Varese CD, at least.

Below is what appears on the new CD, including appropriate comparisons with the Varese album.

One thing to note: Shore had written a few source cues, which are on this new release.

1. Cable 83 - This is a source cue, the theme music for Channel 83.

2. Piercing - This is essentially the film version of Pins and Needles. Though they are not identical, differences are minimal.

3. Civic TV - This is the cue that plays as Max follows through with his orders concerning his partners. This is the 2:19-4:33 portion of TV Passions, and is a prime example of how the people behind the Varese CD wanted to emphasize certain elements of the music that were more in the background in the film version. The three metallic outbursts that are very much pronounced on the Varese CD are, literally, relegated to the background in this film version.

4. Got A Cigarette - This is a previously unreleased cue that plays during the cigarette scene.

5. Nicki Inside - This track begins with a snippet from Welcome To Videodrome that plays from 2:06-2:26 with the electronic sounds brought much more to the foreground. The rest of the track is a previously unreleased cue that plays when Max receives the tape with Brian O’Blivion. The cue has an intro that doesn’t appear in the film and utilizes synthesized moans throughout, also not in the film.

6. Come To Me - This is a mostly previously unreleased cue that plays when Max watches the tape. The portion of Long Live The New Flesh from 2:28 to the end appears in this track but without the synthesized line that plays over top.

7. Samurai Dreams No. 13 - I think this is self-explanatory. I didn’t know Shore composed this.

8. Whipping - This is TV Or Not TV from 2:35 to the end. Differences between the two are minimal.

9. In Bed - This is a previously unreleased cue that plays when Max wakes up in bed after his hallucination at Spectacular Optical.

10. The New Flesh - This is A Slow Burn from 2:44 to the end. If not the same cue, differences seem imperceptible.

11. Spectacular Optical - The final source cue on the CD, the company’s logo music.

12. Transformation - This is TV Passions from 4:52 to the end, followed by the first 2:26 of Long Live The New Flesh. The first portion of this track is a different rendition compared to the Varese, while the latter portion is pretty much the same cue, just a different mix.

13. Gun In Gut - This is the first 2:34 of TV Or Not TV. There’s a minor difference but, basically, the same cue.

14. Cathode Ray Mission - This is 2:59-3:45 of 801 A/B. Differences are minimal.

15. Videodrome Is Death - This is 3:45 to the end of 801 A/B. It has a different intro; otherwise, there are slight differences.

16. Grenade - This is 0:10-2:17 of TV Passions. Differences are minimal.

17. Condemned Vessel - The first 2:26 of this track is, for the most part, previously unreleased, and it plays at the “Spectacular Blowout.” The first :35 of this portion also plays at the very beginning of the film. From :40 to 2:26, underneath the sound effects, you can hear what is, at least, a variation of the music that plays from 0:11-2:33 of A Slow Burn. The rest of the track is 0:11-2:54 of 801 A/B with some minor differences.

Hi, is the 34 sec ominous synthesizer cue that accompanies the opening Videodrome titles before the Channel 83 source music cuts in, anywhere on this release?

Looks like it's the beginning of track 17: "The first :35 of this portion also plays at the very beginning of the film"

Thanks for the breakdown Obrytis718135 !

I always loved the first part of the old ‘a slow burn’ cue but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in the film. I’m assuming it’s not on the new release? It’ll be a while till the postal service delivers mine.
