I remember reading that title - SPECTRAL SHIMMERS - in all the early bios of James Horner, back in the 80s, when I was just getting into his music, and wondering what it might sound like.
Now, some 40 years later, I (and many others) will finally get the chance to find out.
I envy all those people in the concert hall tonight, in Poland, getting to enjoy this concert live.
But what a great thing that everyone else can listen to it in the virtual world.
Do I need to do anything to pre-order the CD or book or DVD, or will those details follow in the coming weeks/months?
Many thanks for this.

Agreed. Being able to finally hear what Spectral Shimmers is all about, after knowing it only as a line in his bio for so long, is pretty amazing. What a day!

Spectral Shimmers was NOT what I expected.

If Krull (especially so), Cocoon, and Aliens got filtered through Gyorgi Ligeti, you’d have a general approximation of what it was. The cynic in me figured Horner had rewritten it into his early scores…but no (save fragments of Krull here and there, especially at the end). It was actually a very original, dense, terrific piece. Obviously Horner put a lot of work into it. Little wonder he was so upset by the fact it got one performance.

There's a real alpine feel to Spectral Shimmers.
I heard some of The Hand near the beginning.
I'm hearing some *batteries not included too, towards the end.
What a blast!

I heard more German Romanticism (especially Beethoven and R. Strauss) in Spectral Shimmers than Horner. Very interesting piece.

'Spectral Shimmers' sounded to me a bit like a graduation piece (was it that?) that was Horner trying to cover showing his abilities. I didn't hear much in it that appeared in his later film works that I have the albums of. There was a little bit of something that would later appear in 'batteries not included', less in literal notes and more in style. The rest was 'new' to me.

Shame about the fluffed notes in 'The Rocketeer' at the beginning, seems like one of the brass players is stuggling a bit.

A Forest Passage is more like the traditional Horner style.
A veritable Greatest Hits compilation.
Nice to hear Natty Gann kick things off.
Oh, there's some Mighty Joe Young/Perfect Storm too.
It's not unlike what Williams did on that Spielberg documentary score, incorporating film theme quotes into the piece.

I heard the flubbage in Rocketeer but I'm not too fussed about the available stuff.
His film score stuff can be very intricate.
I've heard more highly renowned 5 star orchestras mess up his brass sections on many occasions.
I don't think the Aliens titles music should ever be performed in a live Horner concert though.
Surely some of those regular classical players must be thinking 'hang on a minute'.
Stick with the action and suspense sequences.

A Forest Passage was…interesting. It almost felt like a Horner medley.

It uses Fievel Goes West/Dreams to Dream at the beginning verbatim. The French horn run midway through (ouch on the playing) would go on to be used verbatim in the opening of The Perfect Storm.

I also found it interesting how the first half essentially anchored by the B-part of the main theme to Legends of the Fall but takes it in a different direction. The second half is the same with a motif from Cocoon.

The ending was incredible I must say.

Definitely heard it before but still great to hear “new” Horner music. Like having a good chat with an old friend you’ve missed.

Also the arrangement on Avatar is A+. And dang does Clara Sanabras have a set of pipes. I was only familiar with her singing from For Greater Glory but she’s really making Titanic her own.

Glad the big surprise was Flight. I thought that was an odd omission from the program.

At work, so couldn't comment while watching the concert...but God, that music! I was in tears several times (had to close my office door). Thank you Leigh, Erik, Jon, Peter, Tom, Ian, Stefan, and all my fellow music lovers. I enjoyed reading the comments and listening to this wonderful performance of James's work. Will be getting this album and video and book and everything to support this project!!

LOVED Flight!! What a great way to end this!!

Thanks, guys!!

A fantastic tribute to a film music icon.
It was quite obvious, from the wife and daughter interviews, that Horner was quite high up on the 'spectrum'.
He most certainly struggled with emotions and communication and used music and flying to escape the difficulties of modern life.
I also think he was sickening for something in his latter years before his death.
The dramatic weight loss in those later pictures is startling.
But the man leaves behind some of the best MOST EMOTIONAL film music I've ever had the pleasure to listen to.
A big thank you to everyone who made tonight's tribute concert such a pleasure.
And for finally giving me a 40 year closure on THAT piece of music.

Damn.

This concert, with the segments with Sarah and Emily talking about James, have brought back everything I felt when I heard that JH had died.

It's been made even more poignant hearing them talk about how and who JH was. I never knew much about JH's personality, except that he was generally a quieter man. But hearing them talk of him was striking. Ever since I first grasped the style of Horner's music, I felt that somewhere in there was a kindred spirit. Something in the sounds he composed connected with me beyond just the technical. Hearing how they describe him made him sound eerily similar to me. I've recently (in the last few years) been diagnosed as 'autisic', not severly so, but in a far more subtle way. I wonder now if JH might have been too. The real gotcha though, as I've mentioned here before, is that I was born on the same day of the year, albeit sixteen years later. It's almost like there's something 'cosmic' or 'karma' in him being my favourite film composer.

I still feel that I lost a kindred spirit on that midsummer day nearly seven years ago.

R.I.P. 'my kindred spirit'.

Lovely show. Great selections, mostly great performance. I only really found myself disappointed with A Forest Passage but I'll admit that was mostly a matter of expectations. I wanted an original concert piece and instead got a film score collage. But it was really nice for what it was.

As an autistic man, I agree with the above posters that the descriptions of Horner by his family felt incredibly familiar.

The concert is nice (and it's cool to hear these older concert works get performed)... but I think my favorite part of this livestream is the segments with Horner's wife and daughter. Reminds me of the FSM Basil Poledouris documentary where we got to go into his home and meet his wife and daughter, and really get a sense of who he was as a person. Beautiful stuff and I'm glad to have seen it.

Well that was great and was just made more special sharing it over the live chat. Thank you everyone for contributing, it was possibly better than being at the concert.

Do you think the orchestra is up for a sequel? I really missed not hearing a suite from Glory- imagine that as an encore.

I just returned to my hotel after the concert. What a marvelous evening this was. Great mixture of familiar and not so well known pieces. Spectral Shimmers was interesting as it sounded quite different from the Horner we know. My favourite pieces were Ripley's Rescue from Aliens and the magnificent Flight.

A big Thank You to everyone who made this concert possible. It was most certainly worth the trip to Poland.

Awesome! Does jb-martin know if the performance or music will somehow be available for download/purchase at some point?

There is supposed to be a CD release of the concert at some point.

In the meantime, it can still be viewed on YouTube. I think for the next 20 or so hours. Check it out if you can!! It's worth every moment.
